Chapter 14 - The Ventilation Secret

The heavy boots of the state troopers echoed loudly against the hardwood floor of the master suite as everyone crowded into the opulent bedroom. The air in the room felt thick, stale, and unnaturally cold. One of the paramedics stood on a sturdy chair, using a screwdriver to remove a brass vent cover from the wall near the walk-in closet.

Julian stood near the doorway, his arm still smarting from David’s grip, his face pale and sweating profusely despite the cool air conditioning. Clara tried to edge toward the hallway, but a state trooper stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her exit.

"Found it," the paramedic muttered, reaching gloved fingers deep into the metal duct.

He pulled out a heavy, transparent plastic evidence bag containing a small, empty glass vial and a prescription bottle bearing a label that didn't match anything prescribed to Maya’s late mother.

The room went dead silent. The state trooper stepped forward, taking the evidence bag from the paramedic and holding it up to the light.

"Potassium chloride," the trooper read the label aloud, his eyes narrowing as he looked directly at Julian and Clara. "Administered in high doses, this stops the heart within minutes, mimicking a natural cardiac arrest. And it leaves almost no trace in standard local autopsies."

Maya felt the room spin. The luxury handbag slipped slightly in her grip, the heavy leather feeling suddenly heavier than lead. Her mother hadn't died of a weak heart; she had been systematically poisoned in her own home by the two people standing across from her.

"This is a plant!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking into a hysterical pitch as she lunged forward. "They put it there! They broke in and planted it!"

Julian didn't scream. He stood entirely still, staring at the evidence bag with hollow eyes, realizing that every escape route had been systematically blocked.

The state trooper pulled out a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs, stepping toward Julian first.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for the premeditated murder of your wife and federal financial fraud," the officer stated, snapping the cuffs onto Julian’s wrists with a definitive click.

As the second officer moved toward Clara, she let out a sharp, ear-piercing shriek of rage and despair. But before the cuffs could touch her wrists, Clara’s eyes locked onto Maya with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think you won?" Clara snarled, struggling violently against the officer's grip. "Your mother knew about your real father's past, Maya! She knew what he did, and she kept his secrets too! You're just as cursed as the rest of us!"
