Chapter 8

Martha slid the bottled water and crackers through the narrow gap in the fence, keeping her expression neutral and guarded. The elderly woman accepted the items with trembling hands, murmuring a heartfelt expression of gratitude before opening the water and drinking deeply. They didn't exchange names or life stories; in the current climate, personal information was a vulnerability neither party could afford to share. Yet, the brief human interaction acted as a powerful antidote to the soul-crushing isolation that had begun to weigh heavily upon the household.

"You shouldn't stay in this neighborhood," Martha advised quietly, her voice firm yet compassionate. "People are getting desperate, and the main roads are safer than the alleys."

"I know," the woman replied, slipping the crackers into her canvas bag. "I'm heading toward the river community. They say people are organizing there, sharing what's left."

"Be careful," David added from beside the gate, securing the latch once the exchange was completed.

Watching the elderly woman shuffle slowly down the alleyway until she vanished from sight, Martha felt a complex mix of relief and lingering dread. Helping her had cost them very little in terms of provisions, but it had exposed their location to anyone else who might be watching. They returned inside the house immediately, reinforcing the back door with a heavy wooden beam before resuming their respective watch stations. Compassion was essential for preserving their humanity, but it required eternal vigilance to ensure that kindness did not become a fatal vulnerability.
