The sudden departure left an even heavier silence in its wake. David let out a long, slow breath he hadn't realized he was holding, walking back into the living room where Martha stood waiting. Neither of them spoke for several minutes, allowing their racing heart rates to normalize in the safety of the dimly lit room. The encounter served as a harsh, unvarnished reminder of the reality outside their fortified walls. Compassion was a dangerous emotion in a collapsing world, yet abandoning it entirely meant sacrificing the very humanity they were desperately trying to preserve within themselves.

"That could have been any of us," Martha finally said, her voice trembling slightly before she steadied it with a conscious effort.

"I know," David replied, sitting back down slowly. "If we open the door for one person, we put a target on this house. You know how quickly desperation turns into aggression when people realize others have resources."

The street outside was completely empty once more, swallowed by an impenetrable darkness that seemed to pulse with hidden dangers. They understood that the coming days would test their moral boundaries just as severely as their physical endurance. Survival was not merely a matter of food, water, and wooden planks; it was a constant negotiation between self-preservation and ethical responsibility. They spent the rest of the evening in quiet contemplation, each lost in their own thoughts about the fragile state of their sanctuary and the unpredictable world waiting just beyond the wood.
