Chapter 4

As evening descended, plunging Maple Street into deep shadows, a sudden metallic clatter echoed from a few houses down the block. Martha and David froze instantly, stopping all movement in the dimly lit living room. David was sitting near the boarded-up front door, his hand resting instinctively on the handle of a heavy flashlight, while Martha stood motionless beside the bookshelf. The sound was unmistakable: the harsh screech of a metal gate being forced open, followed by heavy, hurried footsteps pounding against concrete pavement. Someone was out there in the dark, moving with desperate speed and ignoring the quiet code of survival that the neighborhood had silently adopted.
"Stay here," David whispered, his lips barely moving as he eased himself out of the wooden chair without making a sound.
"Be careful," Martha replied just as quietly, her gaze fixed on the reinforced entryway. She gripped the edge of the bookshelf, her knuckles turning white under the strain of suppressed anxiety.

Through the narrow cracks between the wooden planks covering the front door, faint beams of erratic light swept across the porch floorboards. Footsteps mounted the steps, heavy and uncoordinated, stumbling slightly against the wood. A frantic fist pounded twice against the newly nailed planks, the impact vibrating through the entire frame of the house. A muffled, desperate voice cried out into the night, pleading for entry, begging for help against an unseen threat that seemed to be pursuing them down the dark street.
Martha felt a sharp pang of empathy twist in her chest, but she locked her jaw and forced herself to remain completely still. Opening the door now would compromise everything they had worked to secure, risking their own survival for an unknown variable in the dark. David stood frozen just inside the hallway, watching the heavy wooden door shudder under the weight of the desperate stranger outside. The pleading voice rose in pitch, then abruptly cut off, replaced by the sound of rapid footsteps fleeing back down the porch stairs and vanishing into the gloom of the distant street corners.
