Chapter 13

Two days later, a distant sound broke the customary silence of Maple Street—not the chaotic footsteps of desperate strangers, but the steady, rumbling drone of heavy utility vehicles moving along the main highway several blocks away. Martha and David froze in their tracks, looking up from the kitchen table where they were reviewing their daily checklist. The sound was organized, rhythmic, and unmistakably institutional. It wasn't the erratic noise of panic; it was the deliberate sound of authority attempting to restore order to a fractured society.

"I heard it," Martha replied, following him closely with measured steps.
They approached the boarded-up front door, standing silently near the timber barricades as the distant sounds grew slightly clearer. Through the cracks in the wood, the faint flashing of amber and blue emergency lights reflected against the houses across the street, casting an intermittent glow over the overgrown lawns. Relief washed over them, mixed with a profound sense of cautious disbelief. The long isolation was finally showing signs of coming to an end, but caution dictated that they wait until the situation outside was demonstrably secure before removing a single nail from their fortress.
