Chapter 6 - The Locked Staircase

The weight of Clara’s final words hung in the suffocating air of the living room. Ricardo gripped the edges of the yellowed letter so tightly that the antique paper threatened to tear in his fist. He looked up at Elena, seeing through the expensive makeup, the designer dress, and the polished social facade for the very first time. Underneath was a cold, calculating stranger who had orchestrated an entire life built on stolen identity and murder.

"You killed her," Ricardo stated, his voice devoid of anger, replaced by a hollow, terrifying realization. "You didn't just replace her. You murdered my wife."

Elena let out a short, chilling laugh. She didn't deny it. Instead, she smoothed down the front of her maroon dress and stepped back toward the floating staircase, her eyes fixed on Ricardo with predatory amusement.

"Clara was weak," Elena said smoothly, her voice echoing in the minimalist space. "She couldn't handle the pressure of this lifestyle. She spent her days crying in the nursery, clutching that ridiculous dollhouse, begging for an escape that never came. I simply gave her what she wanted—permanent peace."

Leo let out a muffled sob, burying his face in his small hands. Ricardo dropped the letters, the velvet box tumbling sideways onto the white rug as he surged to his feet. He took two long strides toward Elena, rage finally overpowering his shock, ready to grab her by the throat and force a confession.

"You monster," Ricardo snarled, reaching out to capture her arm.

Before his fingers could graze her skin, Elena pivoted with practiced agility. She whipped a small, polished brass key from the hidden pocket of her dress and jammed it into a discreet, flush-mounted security panel hidden within the wooden wall paneling beside the stairs.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed throughout the entire penthouse.

Ricardo stopped dead in his tracks. High above them, the heavy security deadbolts on the second-floor landing slammed shut with finality. The sound of industrial-grade locks engaging reverberated through the open-concept ceiling beams, sealing off the upper level entirely.

"What did you do?" Ricardo demanded, lunging for the wall panel.

Elena smiled, stepping backward onto the first step of the staircase, safely out of his reach.

"I just secured our home, darling," Elena whispered sweetly. "And upstairs, waiting patiently in the dark, is your son's real insurance policy."
