Chapter 2 - The Second-Floor Lock

The metallic click from the upstairs landing hung heavily in the air, freezing everyone in place. Ricardo’s hand remained suspended just inches from Leo’s trembling shoulder. He slowly pulled his gaze away from the boy’s tear-filled eyes and stared up the floating architectural staircase that led to the private quarters of the penthouse.
"What was that?" Ricardo demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he stood up to his full height.
Elena didn't blink. She smoothly adjusted the strap of her maroon dress, her posture remaining rigid and guarded. A fleeting micro-expression of panic crossed her face before it was instantly replaced by a calculated, chilly smirk.
"It's just the old smart-lock system acting up again," Elena replied smoothly, stepping directly between Ricardo and the stairs. "You know how faulty the wiring is in this wing. The contractor cut corners, and now every time the wind hits the balcony door, the security latches engage automatically."
Ricardo narrowed his eyes, studying his wife. They had been married for five years, a union built more on social alignment and mutual convenience than fiery passion, but he knew every cadence of her voice. She was lying. He could see the micro-twitch in the corner of her left eye, a physical tell she only exhibited when cornered.
"The wind is completely calm today, Elena," Ricardo countered, his tone hardening. He looked down at Leo, who had curled himself into an even tighter ball, wrapping his arms around his knees as if bracing for a physical blow. "And Leo wouldn't be this afraid of a draft."
"He has an overactive imagination," Elena snapped, her voice rising an octave, losing some of its previous composure. "You spend ninety hours a week at the firm, Ricardo. You don't see the tantrums, the defiance, the manipulative games he plays all day while you're busy climbing the corporate ladder. I am the one managing this household."
"Managing it by locking him away?" Ricardo shot back, his patience finally snapping. He bypassed Elena, moving toward the base of the stairs with heavy, decisive strides.
Elena lunged forward, her hand gripping the sleeve of his dark grey suit with surprising strength. Her fingernails dug through the fabric, biting into his arm.
"Don't you dare go up there," Elena hissed, her face inches from his, her eyes flashing with a desperate menace that Ricardo had never witnessed before. "If you cross that threshold, you have no idea what you're destroying."

Ricardo stared down at her hand, then up into her dilated pupils. He realized then that the pristine, modern luxury of their home was nothing more than a carefully constructed cage. But before he could pry her fingers loose and take the first step toward the forbidden second floor, Leo let out a sharp gasp from the rug behind them, clutching his left wrist with a look of pure agony.
