Chapter 13 - The Foundation of Bones

The hardwood floor beneath Ricardo’s dress shoes dissolved into powdery grey dust, crumbling away to reveal an endless, churning pit of white sand and pale, interlocking bones. Ricardo stumbled backward, clutching Leo tightly against his chest as the edges of the modern living room began to cave inward like a rotting theater set.

"Hold on to me, Leo! Don't let go!" Ricardo shouted over a sudden, howling wind that whipped through the penthouse from nowhere.

"I've got you, Dad!" Leo cried, wrapping his arms securely around Ricardo's neck, his small body trembling violently against the bitter cold.

Elena stood unmoving on the middle of the staircase, her maroon dress fluttering wildly in the gale. She didn't look angry anymore; a triumphant, chilling smile stretched across her face as she raised her hands toward the ceiling beams. The structural pillars of the penthouse groaned, snapping like dry twigs as the entire architectural marvel began to collapse into the abyss.

"You think you can save him?" Elena’s voice carried clearly over the roar of the wind, echoing from everywhere at once. "Clara tried the exact same thing. Look where it got her!"

With a flick of Elena’s wrist, the walls of the living room peeled back like old wallpaper, revealing thousands of small, framed photographs stacked neatly behind the drywall. Ricardo glanced at them in horror as they rushed past in the wind—hundreds of pictures of himself, Leo, Clara, and Elena, taken from angles that no human photographer could have ever achieved. Some photos showed dates from decades before Ricardo was even born, proving that the house had consumed family after family in a repeating, endless cycle of stolen identities.

The floor beneath Ricardo’s feet gave way completely.

He plunged downward into the white void, clutching his son as the wind roared in his ears. The sensation of falling seemed to last an eternity through layers of pitch-black darkness and flashes of blinding light, until they hit a hard, cold surface with a resounding thud.

Ricardo groaned, rolling over to shield Leo as dust and debris rained down around them. He blinked rapidly, shaking the dirt from his eyes, and realized the howling wind had completely vanished.

They were lying on a pristine white rug in the center of a bright, modern living room. The afternoon sunlight cut harshly across the floorboards. Just a few feet away sat a small toy dollhouse with its miniature plastic furniture neatly arranged inside.

Leo sat up beside him, brushing dust from his navy blue suit jacket, looking completely calm.

"Dad," Leo said softly, his voice eerily quiet. "Why are we back at the beginning?"

Before Ricardo could answer, the front door clicked open, and Elena’s voice drifted in from the entryway, cold and precise.
