Chapter 1 - The Broken Dollhouse

The afternoon sunlight cut harshly across the pristine white rug of the modern living room, highlighting every speck of dust hanging in the tense air. Ricardo stood frozen in his dark grey suit, his hand still hovering near the back of his chair, while Elena remained glued to the marble-topped dining table. Her thumb flicked aggressively across her phone screen, dismissing the entire atmosphere with a cold flick of her wrist. Across the room, eight-year-old Leo sat crumpled on the floor beside a miniature wooden toy dollhouse, his tiny fingers nervously clutching the lapel of his navy blue suit jacket.

Elena didn't look up from her device when the heavy silence stretched too thin.

"He does this whenever he wants attention," Elena said coldly, her voice sharp enough to slice through the high-end acoustics of the minimalist penthouse.

Leo shrank further into himself, his small shoulders trembling beneath the expensive wool of his jacket. He stared down at the tiny furniture scattered outside the dollhouse rooms, a plastic dining chair kicked onto its side, a miniature staircase pulled cleanly out of its glued grooves. He looked utterly defeated, carrying a weight far too heavy for a child of eight.

"Dad..." Leo whispered softly, his voice barely carrying over the hum of the central air conditioning.

Ricardo snapped out of his paralysis. The cold detachment he usually reserved for his corporate boardrooms vanished, replaced by a sudden, protective panic. He strode across the hardwood floor, his tall frame dropping quickly as he knelt down beside the white rug. His dark beard bristled as he frowned, his eyes scanning the boy for any visible harm.

"What happened to you?" Ricardo asked, his deep voice dropping into an intimate, urgent register as he gently reached out to inspect the boy's jacket.

Before Ricardo could touch Leo’s shoulder, Elena stepped closer, her one-shoulder maroon dress sweeping gracefully against her stride. She crossed her arms, her diamond necklace catching the glare of the recessed lighting. Her expression was a mask of calculated annoyance, completely devoid of maternal warmth.

"Ricardo, don't make this bigger than it is," Elena said dismissively, rolling her eyes as if managing a minor household inconvenience rather than a terrified child.

Ricardo ignored her, lifting Leo’s chin with a gentle finger. The boy slowly raised his head. His eyes were wide, brimming with unspeakable terror and heavy, unfallen tears. The raw pleading in his gaze sent a cold shiver straight down Ricardo's spine.

Leo leaned in close, his voice a frantic, breathy secret.

"Please... Don't let her take me upstairs again," Leo whispered, just as a sharp, metallic click echoed from the second-floor hallway above them.
