Chapter 8 - Into the Subterranean Tunnels

"Move, now!" Miller yelled, firing a third shot directly at the floor tiles in front of the advancing tactical operative to force him to stumble.
Julian didn't hesitate. Scooping Clara up into his arms once more, ignoring her sharp cry of pain as a contraction peaked, he lunged toward the private back storage room attached to Miller’s office. Miller covered their retreat, keeping his weapon trained on the armored men as they breached the threshold of the main office space, the heavy chemical canister hissing as a thick, white cloud of disorienting smoke began to billow across the floor.
"Through the utility hatch! Third aisle on the left!" Miller shouted over the roar of the ventilation system kicking in to try and clear the smoke.
Julian kicked open the metal louvered door of the storage closet, stepping into a cramped, dusty hallway lined with electrical breaker boxes and old filing archives. At the very end of the corridor stood a heavy, industrial-grade floor hatch labeled Emergency Municipal Access – Authorized Personnel Only.
Clara buried her face in Julian’s chest, her fingers clutching his suit jacket so hard the fabric tore. "Julian... the pain... I can't walk anymore, you have to help me..."
"I've got you, I'm not letting you go," Julian panted, his lungs burning from the thin, smoky air of the squad room behind them. He reached the heavy iron floor ring, dropped Clara gently onto a pile of spare drop cloths in the corner, and threw his entire weight against the industrial latch.
The rusted metal mechanism shrieked in protest, refusing to budge. Behind them, the muffled sounds of shouting and heavy boots crashing through the storage room door echoed down the narrow corridor. The tactical operatives were right behind them.
"Hurry, Julian! They're in the hallway!" Miller yelled, backing up into the utility closet and firing two rapid shots down the narrow corridor to suppress their pursuers, before diving backward into the storage space and slamming the louvered door shut, locking it with a simple deadbolt that wouldn't hold for more than ten seconds.
Julian screamed in frustration, planted his foot firmly against the iron frame of the floor hatch, and pulled upward with every ounce of adrenaline and adrenaline-fueled strength in his body. With a sharp, metallic pop, the rusted seal broke loose, the heavy iron door swinging upward on its hydraulic hinges to reveal a dark, cavernous shaft plunging downward into the damp, concrete-lined depths of the city's old stormwater and transit maintenance tunnels.
A cool, damp draft smelling of damp earth and distant rail lines rushed up from the abyss below.
"Go! Down the ladder!" Miller urged, grabbing a heavy flashlight off the wall mount and shoving it into Julian’s hand. He turned back to the louvered door just as the first tactical operative slammed his shoulder against it, splintering the wood into kindling.
Julian didn't wait. He hoisted Clara into his arms once more, stepping backward onto the vertical iron rungs bolted into the damp concrete wall of the maintenance shaft. Every step down felt like a monumental risk, holding a woman in active labor while descending a rusted ladder into pitch-black darkness, but staying meant certain capture and the destruction of everything they held dear.

As Julian descended into the gloom with Clara whimpering in his arms, the louvered door above them finally gave way with a deafening crash, and the harsh beam of a tactical flashlight pierced the darkness of the shaft, illuminating their descent.
