Chapter 10 - Miracles in the Dark

"Clear the sector! Move forward!" a harsh voice echoed through the damp concrete tube from the direction of the access ladder. The beam of their flashlights danced wildly across the curved walls, rapidly closing the distance between them.
Julian didn't look back. He dropped to his knees beside Clara, his hands trembling as he reached out to guide her through the most critical moment of their lives. The fear, the corporate conspiracy, the threats of ruin and violence—it all melted away, replaced by a hyper-focused, desperate instinct to protect the new life coming into the world.
"Push, Clara, push!" Julian urged, his voice cracking with emotion as he supported her back. "You can do it. Just one more good push—"
Clara let out a raw, soul-shattering cry that echoed down the cavernous tunnel, her hands gripping Julian’s forearms so tightly her fingernails broke the skin. She pushed with every ounce of physical and emotional energy left in her broken body.
A sharp, wet slap of sound echoed against the concrete, followed immediately by the most beautiful, miraculous sound Julian had ever heard in his entire life: the thin, fragile, but undeniably fierce wail of a newborn baby crying out into the dark.
"It's a girl," Julian whispered, tears streaming freely down his cheeks as he carefully gathered the tiny, slippery infant into his cupped hands, using his clean undershirt to gently wrap the newborn against the sudden chill of the subterranean air. "Clara, look. It's a healthy baby girl."
Clara collapsed backward onto the makeshift pallet of jackets and drop cloths, her chest heaving as she let out a breathless, sobbing laugh of pure relief. "Let me hold her... please, Julian..."
Julian carefully placed the crying infant onto Clara’s chest. Clara wrapped her weak arms around the tiny bundle, pressing kisses to the top of the baby's damp head while weeping uncontrollably. "My baby... my sweet little girl..."
"Flashlight! Over there by the utility curve! I see movement!" the harsh voice shouted from just twenty yards away. The beam of a high-intensity tactical light cut through the gloom, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air directly above them.
Julian scrambled to his feet, shielding Clara and the newborn with his own body. He grabbed the heavy iron crowbar from the ground, turning to face the approaching tactical operatives with a fierce, protective rage that defied all odds. Three armed men stepped out from the shadows of the tunnel curve, their black tactical vests and balaclavas reflecting the harsh white glare of their weapon-mounted lights.
"Drop the weapon and step away from the civilian," the lead operative commanded, leveling a non-lethal riot rifle directly at Julian’s chest. "This is your final warning."
Julian stood his ground, his boots planted firmly in the gravel, his chest heaving as he raised the crowbar like a spear. "You take one step closer, and I swear to God I'll smash every single diagnostic line running through this conduit, plunging this entire district into a blackout that will cost your bosses billions."

The operative hesitated for a fraction of a second, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. But before he could give the order to fire, a sudden, deafening roar echoed from the transit tracks on the other side of the locked steel door—a commuter train screeching to a halt at the platform, its hydraulic brakes hissing loudly as the doors slid open just feet away.
