Chapter 12 - Sanctuary in Plain Sight

The subway car hurtled through the dark underground transit tubes, swaying rhythmically from side to side as it picked up speed toward the university district. Inside the crowded carriage, passengers had instinctively cleared a wide circle around Julian, Clara, and the newborn baby, whispering nervously among themselves while casting sympathetic, fearful glances at the young family.

Clara sat slumped on a blue vinyl bench seat, her head resting against Julian’s shoulder as he kept one arm securely wrapped around her waist, using his other hand to shield the baby from the drafty air conditioning vents.

"We're safe for now," Julian whispered softly, pressing a kiss to Clara’s damp forehead. "The train won't stop until the university station. Once we're there, we can go straight to the campus medical center."

"They'll be waiting for us there, too, Julian," Clara murmured, her voice weak and fragile, exhaustion finally taking a heavy toll on her battered body. "Marcus Vance owns half the real estate in this city. The university hospital is funded by his foundation. We can't walk into a corporate-backed clinic."

Julian stared down at the floor between his shoes, his jaw tightening as the bitter reality of their situation set in. She was right. Vance Industries' tentacles reached into every major medical facility, legal institution, and corporate office in the metropolitan area. Seeking formal help meant walking right back into a trap.

"Then we don't go to a hospital," Julian said after a tense moment of deliberation, his tone hardening with a sudden, resolute clarity. "We go somewhere they'd never think to look. We go to your mother’s house on the east side."

Clara lifted her head, her eyes widening in alarm. "My mother’s house? Julian, are you crazy? Elena knows where my family lives. If we go there, we're handing ourselves over on a silver platter."

"Elena only knows what her father’s security team has fed her about your background," Julian countered, pulling out his burner phone—the one he had grabbed from the desk before fleeing the house—and quickly scrolling through his contacts. "Remember what you told me about your estranged uncle? The one who lives off the grid in the old fishing cabins up near the northern county line?"

Clara stared at him, the logic slowly sinking through the haze of her exhaustion. "Uncle Hank... he hasn't spoken to my family in ten years. He lives in a trailer park three hours north, completely off the corporate grid. They wouldn't even know he exists."

"Exactly," Julian nodded, dialing a number from an old business card he had tucked into his wallet months ago just in case of an emergency. "And he hates Marcus Vance with a passion."

The phone rang three times before a gruff, raspy voice answered on the other end. "Yeah? Who is this?"

"Hank? It's Julian Vance. You don't know me well, but I'm Clara’s partner," Julian said rapidly, keeping his voice low so the surrounding subway passengers couldn't hear every word. "We are in mortal danger. Clara just gave birth in a subway tunnel, and her father’s security forces are hunting us across the city. We need a place to hide, and we need it tonight."

There was a heavy, pregnant silence on the other end of the line. The only sound was the crackle of static and the distant barking of a dog. Then, Hank let out a low, gravelly chuckle.

"Well, I'll be damned," the old man muttered. "I always knew marrying into that billionaire snake pit would bite you in the ass, boy. Get off the subway at the end of the line at North Terminal. Rent a beat-up car with cash—don't use your credit cards, or they'll ping your GPS in two seconds—and drive up Route 9. Look for the rusted red mail box with a dead raccoon nailed to the post. I'll be sitting on the porch with a shotgun loaded and waiting for you."
