Chapter 7 - Breach at the Precinct

The heavy wooden door of Detective Miller’s office groaned under a second, more violent strike from the hallway. Wood splintered around the reinforced brass deadbolt, sending small flakes of paint cascading down onto the linoleum floor. Clara let out a terrified scream, curling herself around her protruding belly as Julian threw his body protectively over hers, shielding her with his own broad shoulders.
"Stay down!" Miller shouted, racking the slide of his service pistol with a sharp, metallic clack. He aimed his weapon directly at the center of the splintering door, his stance wide and balanced. "If anyone crosses that threshold without a badge, I am authorized to use lethal force!"
"Detective Miller! Open up!" a harsh, unfamiliar voice commanded from the other side of the door. It wasn't the police chief, nor was it a fellow officer. The cadence was cold, rhythmic, and corporate—the voice of private security operatives who answered only to the highest bidder. "Step away from the civilian and place your hands on your head. This is an Internal Affairs retrieval order signed by Deputy Commissioner Vance."
Miller scoffed, keeping his weapon locked and loaded. "Deputy Commissioner Vance doesn't have jurisdiction over an active federal major crimes investigation! Get lost or you'll leave this floor in a body bag!"
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Detective," the voice replied calmly. "The power grid for this entire municipal block has just been rerouted through Vance Industries' private grid. Your communications are jammed, your backup isn't coming, and you are entirely alone."
Julian pressed his face close to Clara’s ear, his voice urgent and steady despite the chaos around them. "Clara, look at me. Breathe. You're going to be okay. We're going to get through this."
"Julian, I can't hold it," Clara sobbed, her face pale, tears streaming freely down her cheeks as her body shook with the intensity of labor. "The baby is coming—right now. Oh god, it hurts—"
Miller glanced back over his shoulder, his eyes widening as he took in the medical reality unfolding behind him. He dropped his left hand from his weapon, pulling his encrypted department radio off his belt, only to hear a continuous, high-pitched tone of absolute dead air. The hackers had severed their radio frequencies entirely.
"Julian," Miller said, his voice dropping into a grim, urgent whisper. "They've cut every line out of this building. If she’s delivering right now, we don't have time to wait for reinforcements or argue with corporate mercenaries. We have to move through the back utility stairwell."
"The stairwell leads straight to the underground garage," Julian argued, shaking his head. "That's where their vehicles are waiting!"
"It's also connected to the municipal subway tunnel maintenance lines," Miller countered quickly, stepping over to his office filing cabinet and pulling out a heavy brass master key ring hidden behind a magnetic panel. "It's an old blueprint route that isn't on their corporate satellite maps. If we can reach the maintenance hatch before they breach this door, we can drop down into the transit lines and make it across town to the university medical center."
With a deafening crash, the office door finally gave way. The reinforced wooden frame splintered entirely inward as three men dressed in tactical black gear, wearing heavy ceramic body armor and balaclavas that obscured their faces, poured into the small office.
Miller didn't hesitate. He fired two warning shots into the acoustic ceiling tiles, the deafening roar of the gunshots echoing like thunder in the confined space. "Back off! Federal officers! Stand down!"

The lead operative didn't even flinch at the gunfire. He raised a heavy non-lethal riot shield and advanced steadily toward Miller, while the second operative reached behind his tactical vest and pulled out a heavy-duty chemical canister, preparing to flood the room with gas.
