Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Foyer

Julian’s arm remained suspended in the air, his finger still aimed like a loaded weapon at Elena’s chest, but his head snapped toward the archway leading to the grand foyer. The unexpected sound of footsteps clicking against the Italian marble tiles outside froze the tableau in the dining room. Elena swallowed hard, her throat visibly dry, while Clara tried to quiet her sobs, pressing her palms harder against her swollen stomach as another wave of fear washed over her.

"Who is that?" Julian demanded, his voice a low, dangerous whisper that brooked no argument. He lowered his hand slowly, never taking his eyes off his wife. "Elena. Who else is in this house? You said we were alone."

"I don't know," Elena lied, though her voice lacked its previous venom, replaced now by a thin, reedy tremor. She backed away a step, her heel catching slightly on the edge of the Persian rug. "The staff—the staff doesn't come on Tuesdays. You know that. It's their day off."

"Then who just unlocked the front door?" Julian barked, turning his back on her entirely to face the double doors. He took two heavy steps forward, his black suit jacket pulling tight across his broad shoulders.

Before Julian could reach the threshold, a tall, impeccably dressed older man appeared in the doorway. Marcus Vance, Elena’s father and the primary shareholder of Vance Industries, stepped into the room with the casual arrogance of a man who owned the ground beneath his feet. His silver hair was brushed back immaculately, and his gray overcoat was draped over one arm. But the moment his sharp, pale-blue eyes took in the bizarre scene—Julian standing rigidly in the center, Elena looking like a trapped animal in her ruined white blazer, and a heavily pregnant maid sobbing on the floor amidst a sea of broken eggs—his expression darkened into a scowl.

"What in God's name is going on in here?" Marcus asked, his voice booming with aristocratic authority. He didn't wait for an answer, his gaze immediately locking onto Julian. "Julian, I thought you were at the downtown office finalizing the merger. Why are you shouting? And why is there a servant sprawled on the floor like a wounded animal?"

Julian didn't flinch. He turned to face his father-in-law, the fury in his eyes now redirected into a cold, calculating glare. "Ask your daughter, Marcus. Ask her why she told me three months ago that Clara had packed her bags and left the state. Ask her why she swore on her mother’s grave that the child Clara was carrying—my child—was lost in an unfortunate accident."

Marcus’s eyebrows shot up, though he masked his surprise with practiced ease. He glanced sideways at Elena, whose eyes were wide with sheer panic. The older man cleared his throat, adjusting his gold-rimmed cufflinks with agonizing slowness. "Julian, let’s not be dramatic. Elena has been under an immense amount of stress lately. The board meetings, the press scrutiny over the foundation—her mind has been fragile. If there’s been a misunderstanding—"

"A misunderstanding?" Julian stepped up to Marcus, towering over the older man by several inches. "There is no misunderstanding here, Marcus. That is my child she is carrying. And your daughter has been keeping her locked in this house like a prisoner, treating her like dirt while feeding me a steady stream of fabricated lies."

Clara, sensing a sudden shift in the power dynamic and realizing that her only ally in the room was her lover, pushed herself up onto her hands and knees. Her maid's uniform was ruined beyond recognition, stiffening as the raw egg dried under the chandelier's heat. "Mr. Vance," Clara croaked out, her voice raw and desperate. "Please. Tell him. I begged her to let me go home to my mother when I started showing, but she said if I ever left, Julian would never see me again, and she’d make sure I never worked another day in this city."

Marcus looked down at Clara with utter disdain, as if she were a piece of trash blown in by the wind. "Silence, girl. You are a paid employee who clearly forgot her place."

"She is the mother of my child!" Julian roared, the volume of his voice shaking the crystal pendants of the chandelier above them. He whirled back to Elena, grabbing her by the shoulders of her white blazer with a force that made her gasp. "Tell me the truth right now, Elena. Why? Why did you hide her here?"

Elena stared up into Julian’s enraged face, her own expression suddenly hardening, shedding the panic for a chilling, defiant calm. She reached up and pried his hands off her shoulders with surprising strength, stepping back to smooth down her lapels.

"Because you would have left me for her," Elena said, her voice eerily quiet and steady. "And I built this empire with my bare hands, Julian. I’m not about to let some penniless maid walk away with my husband and my legacy."

Julian stared at her, utterly horrified by the casual cruelty of her confession. Before he could speak, Marcus stepped forward, placing a heavy, warning hand on Julian’s arm. "Think very carefully about your next move, Julian," Marcus murmured, his voice laced with a subtle, predatory threat. "If this gets out to the press, Vance Industries goes under, and every asset you own is tied up in prenuptial litigation for the next decade. Walk away, let us handle the girl quietly, and we can all pretend this nightmare never happened."
