Chapter 8 - The Hidden Blueprint

“His pulse is dropping fast, El, we need to pull him all the way out of that hole and get him to the car,” Mark said urgently, hooking his arms under the old man’s shoulders.
“We can’t put a wild vagrant into my leather seats, Mark, the estate agents are coming at four o’clock,” Eleanor objected automatically, though she stood up and brushed the dust off her grey skirt with trembling hands.
“To hell with the estate agents! A man’s life is hanging by a thread right here in our living room!” Mark shouted angrily, heaving Arthur’s frail body out of the dirt and onto the clean hardwood floor.
“Look at his coat, Mark—there’s something sewn into the inner lining,” Eleanor observed, pointing a shaking finger at the heavy wool garment as it spread open on the floor.
“It’s another blueprint... but this one isn’t for the house,” Mark muttered, sliding his fingers into the torn lining and pulling out a tightly rolled roll of yellowed tracing paper.
“Unroll it carefully, don’t tear it,” Eleanor instructed, kneeling beside her husband despite her initial hesitation as they spread the fragile map across the Persian rug.
“This is the original municipal layout of the entire town... and look at where our property sits,” Mark whispered, tracing a faded red ink line with his finger.
“It’s not just a house... the entire residential block is built over an active underground limestone quarry,” Eleanor read aloud, her eyes widening in horror as she scanned the technical notations.
“And according to these weight calculations... the foundation pillars were never anchored to bedrock,” Mark added, his blood running cold as he looked around the parlor.
“That’s why the floor cracked... the weight of the new extension is causing the whole sub-structure to sink into the old mining tunnels,” Eleanor realized, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

“And based on the timeline on this map, the collapse isn’t scheduled for years from now—it’s mapped for today,” Mark said, just as a deep, metallic groan echoed from beneath the entire foundation of the house.
