Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dust

“I told you someone is trapped alive under this foundation, Eleanor, so drop the corporate denial and help me find a flashlight,” Mark whispered fiercely, his chest heaving as he kept his eyes locked on the dark hole.

“Mark, think rationally for one second about what you are suggesting; this house was built in nineteen-twentyeight by my grandfather, and there is nothing beneath these boards except concrete footings,” Eleanor argued, her voice dropping to a tense, trembling register as she crossed her arms tightly over her grey suit jacket.

“Grandfather Sterling built a lot of things, El, but have you ever wondered why the county records show this specific lot was vacant for three years after the initial zoning permit?” Mark shot back, his hands already digging into the loose soil exposed by the broken floor joists.

“Stop digging in that filth, Mark, you are tracking dirt all over the Persian rug,” Eleanor scolded automatically, though her feet remained rooted to the spot, her gaze drawn unwillingly toward the ragged hole.

“Mommy, the hand is coming back up, I can see the fingers moving in the shadows,” Lily whispered from the doorway, her small frame trembling as she clutched a frayed stuffed rabbit to her chest.

“Lily, go to your room right now,” Eleanor commanded sharply, though her own voice lacked its usual unyielding authority.

“Stay right there, Lily, maybe whoever it is needs our help,” Mark said, ignoring his wife as he reached down into the chilling gloom, his fingers brushing against something cold and textile-wrapped.

“Don’t touch it, Mark! We don’t know what kind of vermin or structural decay is living down there,” Eleanor warned, stepping back as a wave of damp, metallic air drifted up from the sub-floor.

“It’s not vermin, Eleanor, it’s fabric—heavy wool, like an old winter coat,” Mark muttered, his brow furrowing as he pulled upward with steady, cautious pressure.

The dark void suddenly shifted, and a muffled groan rose from the depths, sounding impossibly weary and entirely human.
