Chapter 15 - The Reckoning

“Arthur, wait! You don’t have to destroy everything to prove your point!” Eleanor called out, running across the ruined street toward the open vault door with Mark close behind her, shielding Lily in his arms.
“Everything is already destroyed, child... your grandfather saw to that eighty years ago,” Arthur’s voice echoed across the quiet park, carrying a strange, peaceful resonance as he stood before the rising tide of dust.
“The fraud is out, the files are copied, and the state authorities are already receiving the broadcast from the car,” Mark shouted, holding up the flashing flash drive as proof.
“Then my work here is finally finished,” Arthur whispered, lowering the ledger into the empty space between the broken paving stones.
“What happens now, Arthur? Do we spend the rest of our lives paying for sins we didn’t commit?” Eleanor asked, her voice softening as she looked at the tragic old man who had lost his entire existence to greed and betrayal.
“You build something honest on top of the ruins, child... something that doesn’t require a secret room in the dark,” Arthur replied, offering a faint, weary smile before turning back toward the open subterranean stairs.
“Wait, where are you going?” Lily called out softly from her father’s arms, her small voice cutting through the evening air.
“Home, little one... down where the earth is quiet and the lies can’t reach me anymore,” Arthur answered, stepping down into the shadows of the vault just as the heavy iron doors began to slide slowly back together under their own immense weight.

“Should we stop him, El?” Mark asked, reaching out toward the descending steel plates.
“No, Mark... let him finally rest,” Eleanor whispered, taking her husband’s hand as the massive doors clicked shut with a final, echoing thud, sealing the past away beneath the earth forever.
