Chapter 13 - The Digital Ghost

“The electrical system... it just rebooted on its own,” Mark whispered, staring through the open driver’s side window as the center console screen began flashing a single file prompt.
“Insert drive to complete transfer,” the digital voice navigation system spoke aloud in the empty car, its tone unnaturally flat and mechanical.
“That’s not the factory GPS voice, that’s my father’s voice recording,” Eleanor gasped, stepping back from the vehicle as if it were contaminated.
“Should we plug it in, El? Or do we smash the drive right now and walk away from this entire nightmare?” Mark asked, holding the small plastic rectangle between his thumb and forefinger.
“We plug it in, Mark. I need to know if my entire life—my career, my inheritance, my family name—was built on a lie,” Eleanor resolved, her voice steadying with a cold, professional defiance.
Mark leaned into the car and slotted the flash drive into the USB port beneath the dashboard.
The screen went black for three agonizing seconds before a live video feed appeared, showing a dimly lit basement room filled with old filing cabinets and stacks of currency.
“That’s not our basement... that’s the municipal bank vault from nineteen-forty-two,” Mark observed, leaning over the center console to get a better look.
“And look who is standing at the back of the room, opening the safe,” Eleanor whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the screen.
A young man in a tailored grey suit—her own grandfather—was loading heavy canvas bags of cash into a wooden crate marked for structural timber.
“He didn’t just steal the town money, he framed the entire Miller family for the theft before bricking them into the cellar,” Mark realized, watching the historical footage play out in silent, damning clarity.
Suddenly, the camera angle on the screen shifted, panning upward to show a pair of eyes watching the recording from the ceiling above.

It was Arthur Miller, looking down through a floor grate with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred.
