Chapter 14 - The Final Vault

“The camera isn’t historical footage, Mark... it’s broadcasting live from somewhere right beneath where we are standing,” Eleanor realized, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

“That’s impossible, the whole house collapsed into the sinkhole five minutes ago,” Mark argued, scanning the surrounding landscape for any sign of a surviving structure.

“Not the house, Mark—look at the survey map we pulled from Arthur’s coat,” Eleanor urged, grabbing the tracing paper from the hood of the car.

“The limestone quarry doesn’t end at our foundation... it runs all the way under the municipal park across the street,” Mark traced the red ink lines with his finger, finally understanding the true scale of the underground labyrinth.

“Arthur didn’t die in the collapse... he crawled through the old drainage tunnels toward the town square,” Eleanor said, staring at the flashing red dot on the car’s GPS tracking system.

“The signal on the flash drive is transmitting coordinates... it’s leading us straight to the old town hall basement,” Mark observed, watching the numbers tick downward on the screen.

“We have to go after him, Mark. If he releases those files to the state attorney general, every asset my firm manages will be seized immediately,” Eleanor panicked, her corporate instincts kicking in with cold urgency.

“Forget the assets, El, look at what’s happening across the street,” Mark interrupted, pointing toward the municipal park.

The ground in the center of the green space was beginning to buckle upward, sending ancient oak trees crashing down as a massive concrete vault door slowly rose from the subterranean depths.

As the heavy iron doors parted with a deafening screech of rusted hinges, a frail figure stepped out into the twilight, holding the original municipal ledger high above his head like a trophy.
