Chapter 9 - The Faded Photograph

Sarah took the weathered leather wallet with trembling fingers. The leather was stiff and mildewed, smelling faintly of damp earth and old paper. She flipped it open, revealing a faded plastic ID card with a young man's face smiling back at her—Thomas, before the darkness, before the betrayal.

Tucked behind the ID was a folded piece of lined notebook paper, yellowed with age and water-stained at the edges.

"What is that?" Lily asked, peering curiously over the edge of the blanket.

"Just an old letter, honey," Sarah murmured, unfolding the fragile paper with extreme care.

The handwriting was neat, looping, and remarkably similar to Mark's. As Sarah scanned the opening lines, her breath caught in her throat. It wasn't a suicide note or a threat; it was a deed transfer, signed and notarized the very week Thomas had supposedly vanished.

"Detective," Sarah called out, lifting her gaze to the investigator standing nearby. "You need to look at this document. It looks like Mark forged Thomas's signature to take sole ownership of the house and the family business."

The investigator stepped closer, shining a small penlight onto the paper. His eyebrows furrowed as he read the faded ink.

"This changes everything," the investigator muttered, pulling out a small evidence bag. "This isn't just an assault or a kidnapping case anymore. This is premeditated fraud spanning twenty years. Every asset Mark owns, every dollar in your joint bank accounts—legally, it belongs to Thomas."

Sarah felt the ground shift beneath her feet once again, though this time it had nothing to do with broken floorboards.

"Everything?" Sarah asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Our savings, the house, the car?"

"All of it," the detective confirmed gently. "Mr. Dawson built his entire life on a stolen foundation. And now, the bill has come due."
