Chapter 15 - The Final Threshold

The heavy front door splintered inward as three burly bounty hunters, hired by Mark's defense team in a desperate bid to locate hidden assets, stormed into the living room.
"Nobody move!" the lead bounty hunter barked, brandishing a heavy flashlight as he swept the room.
Sarah screamed, stepping instinctively in front of the kitchen doorway to shield Thomas.
"What are you doing here?" Sarah demanded, her voice echoing off the walls. "Get out of my house!"
"We're looking for hidden bearer bonds Mark Dawson stashed on the property," the bounty hunter snarled, stepping past the plywood-covered hole in the floor. "And it looks like we found a guest."
Thomas stood up slowly from the kitchen chair, his frail frame trembling, but his expression entirely calm. He looked at the ruined floorboards, then at the broken front door, and finally at Sarah and the memory of Lily's laughter echoing from upstairs.
"There are no bonds here," Thomas said clearly, his voice ringing through the house with surprising strength. "Only ghosts."
"Shut your mouth, old man," the bounty hunter lunged forward, grabbing Thomas by the collar of his hospital coat.
"Let him go!" Sarah shouted, grabbing the heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth and stepping forward with fierce determination.
Before the bounty hunter could react, the wail of police sirens pierced the air outside—not the distant sirens of days past, but a deafening convoy of cruisers pulling up directly onto the front lawn with red and blue lights flashing in a blinding strobe effect.
Megaphones blared from the street. "Federal Marshals! Surround the house! Drop your weapons immediately!"
The bounty hunters froze, exchanging panicked glances before dropping their flashlights and raising their hands in surrender as heavily armed officers swarmed through the broken front doorway.
In the chaos, Sarah looked down at the floor, where the sunlight finally broke through the parting clouds outside, shining directly through the shattered floorboards into the dark space below. The shadows were gone, replaced by the warm, unbroken light of day.

Thomas placed a gentle, trembling hand on Sarah's shoulder. "Let the house go, Sarah. Some foundations are meant to break so we can finally build something real."
Sarah nodded, wiping the last tear from her cheek, and took her first step toward the front door, leaving the house beneath their feet behind forever.
