Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The heavy porcelain teacup rattled against the silver rim of the tray, spilling lukewarm chamomile over the polished surface. Sarah clutched the tray tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white inside her charcoal-gray suit jacket. Across the sunlit living room, Mark was still scrambling backward on his hands and knees, his maroon polo shirt snagged on a jagged splinter of dark oak.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Mark?" Sarah shouted, her voice cutting through the heavy afternoon air like broken glass.

"Look at the floor, Sarah! Look at what was hiding under our feet!" Mark yelled back, his chest heaving as he stared into the black void where the decaying hand had just vanished.

Five-year-old Lily sat huddled near the sofa, her blue ruffled top stained with fresh tears. She whimpered softly, pulling her knees up to her chest.

"You're scaring her to death!" Sarah dropped the tray with a deafening crash, porcelain shattering across the rug. "You always overreact! It's just an old animal, a stray raccoon, or some structural rot from the damp basement!"

"A raccoon doesn't wear a wedding ring, Sarah!" Mark snapped, his face pale with shock. "A raccoon doesn't have human fingernails caked in dried dirt!"

"You're losing your mind," Sarah whispered, backing away from the gaping hole in the timber.

"Come here and look for yourself if you think I'm lying!" Mark challenged, pointing a trembling finger at the darkness.

"I'm calling pest control," Sarah said, reaching into her pocket with shaking fingers.

"Don't you dare touch that phone," a raspy, unfamiliar voice echoed up from the hollow space beneath the floorboards.
