Chapter 10 - The Empty House

By evening, the police lights had vanished, leaving the suburban street shrouded in quiet darkness. The front door of the house remained unlocked, guarded by a single yellow strip of crime scene tape fluttering in the night breeze. Sarah sat at the kitchen island, the overhead fluorescent light buzzing softly in the quiet room.
Lily was fast asleep upstairs in her own bed, exhausted by the emotional turmoil of the day. Sarah held a mug of cold tea between her palms, staring down at the polished granite countertop.
The house felt entirely different now. It no longer felt like a warm family home; it felt like a museum of lies, built over a forgotten tomb. Every footstep echoed with the ghost of Thomas's suffering, a constant reminder of the man her husband had truly been.
Her phone buzzed on the counter, startling her. It was a text message from an unknown number.
Mrs. Dawson. This is Detective Miller. Thomas is stable at Mercy General Hospital. He asked to see you.
Sarah stared at the glowing screen. Visit Thomas? The man who had terrorized her home, yet the victim of a monstrous crime committed by the man she had loved for ten years.
She stood up, grabbing her gray suit jacket from the back of the chair and slipping it on. She couldn't pretend none of this had happened. She couldn't stay in this house without knowing the full extent of the nightmare.
Driving through the quiet city streets, Sarah felt a surreal detachment, as if she were an observer in someone else's tragedy. When she parked outside Mercy General Hospital, the rain had begun to fall, drumming a steady rhythm against the windshield.
She walked through the automatic sliding doors, her heels clicking against the sterile white linoleum floors. A nurse directed her down the third-floor corridor to Room 312.

Sarah paused outside the door, her hand resting on the cold metal handle. She took a deep breath, pushed the door open, and stepped inside the dimly lit hospital room.
