Chapter 12 - The Legal Battleground

The fluorescent lights of the hospital room hummed overhead as the attorney, whose name tag read Victoria Vance, stepped fully into the small space. She placed her briefcase on the rolling tray table with a decisive clatter.

"Mrs. Vance, this isn't the time," Sarah started, standing up from her chair.

"On the contrary, Mrs. Dawson, timing is everything," Victoria replied smoothly, her sharp gaze shifting between Sarah and Thomas. "Under state law, property acquired through active fraud and unlawful confinement reverts entirely to the rightful owner. That includes your home, your joint bank accounts, and every asset Mark Dawson accumulated over the last two decades."

Sarah felt the air rush out of her lungs. "You're saying everything is gone? That Lily and I have nothing?"

"Legally, yes," Victoria stated without a trace of malice, simply laying out the cold facts. "Mark's assets are being frozen as we speak. As Thomas's legal representative, I am filing to reclaim the entirety of the estate effective immediately."

Sarah looked at Thomas, her eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and desperation. "Thomas, you can't do this. Lily is innocent in all of this. She has nothing to do with what Mark did."

Thomas closed his eyes for a long moment, drawing a ragged breath. When he opened them again, his gaze was filled with profound sorrow, but unwavering resolve.

"I don't want to hurt Lily, Sarah," Thomas whispered. "She is the only pure thing that came out of this house in twenty years."

"Then let us keep our home," Sarah pleaded, her voice cracking for the first time. "Let us rebuild somewhere else, or let us share it."

"It's not about the house, Sarah," Thomas said softly. "It's about the truth. For twenty years, I was buried under a lie. I need my name back. I need my life back."

Victoria Vance slid a document across the tray table toward Sarah. "Mr. Dawson has authorized me to offer a settlement. You and Lily may remain in the house for thirty days while arrangements are made, but all financial accounts will be transferred to Thomas's name by morning."

Sarah stared at the paper, the signature line blank and waiting. She realized then that there was no escaping the wreckage Mark had left behind.

"Thirty days," Sarah repeated numbly.

"Thirty days," Victoria confirmed. "And then, the past finally stays in the past."
