Chapter 6: The Liquidation of Pride

Over the next seventy-two hours, Amanda’s manufactured world was dismantled piece by piece.
She called her landlord in Lakewood, broke her lease on the luxury studio apartment, and surrendered her security deposit. She posted every designer coat, leather handbag, imported wool sweater, and vintage Scandinavian chair on online consignment platforms.
She held an open estate sale on her sidewalk on Saturday morning.
Women from her former social circle arrived in luxury SUVs, picking through her cashmere scarves and art supplies with thinly veiled amusement and condescending pity.
A former gallery colleague, Vanessa, picked up a pair of designer Italian boots. ""Amanda, darling, what is happening? Are you relocating to Milan?""
Amanda stood behind the folding table, wearing an old denim jacket and work boots, her hair tied back in a plain ponytail.
""No, Vanessa,"" Amanda said calmly, her voice completely stripped of its old pretense. ""I’m paying my debts.""
Vanessa’s smile froze, and she quickly paid twenty dollars in cash before scurrying back to her car.
By Sunday evening, the studio was empty.
Amanda had raised four thousand two hundred dollars from the sale of her possessions.

She loaded three cardboard boxes of essential clothes, her sketching charcoal, and her drafting rulers into the back of David’s car, leaving behind the keys to an empty room and the illusion of a woman who had never existed.
