Chapter 13: The Gift by the Tree

The living room of the Miller home was warm, lit only by the colored lights on the small pine tree and the flickering embers of the fireplace.
Evelyn sat in Frank’s armchair, wearing her favorite knit sweater, holding a mug of warm spiced cider while David tuned an old acoustic guitar on the sofa.
The front door opened, letting in a swirl of fresh snow.
Amanda walked in, took off her coat, and walked over to her mother’s chair.
She knelt on the braided rug before Evelyn, took her mother’s frail, spotted hands, and placed the black velvet box into her lap.
Evelyn looked down, her breath catching in her throat.
With trembling fingers, she opened the lid.
The diamond necklace lay on its bed of silk, pristine, whole, and redeemed.
""Amanda..."" Evelyn gasped, her voice breaking into a soft, weeping cry. ""How... where did you...""
""Dad didn't lose it, Mom,"" Amanda whispered, resting her head against her mother’s knees. ""He just lent it to me so I could learn how to stand on my own feet. It belongs to you. It always did.""
David set down his guitar, walked over, and knelt beside his sister, wrapping an arm around both of them.
Evelyn lifted the necklace from the box, pressing the cool platinum against her cheek, her tears falling like rain onto the diamonds.

In the corner of the room, Aunt Clara stood quietly by the mantelpiece, a rare, radiant smile gracing her dignified face, nodding in silent, unreserved approval.
