Chapter 15: The Living Stone

On a golden afternoon in late October, on the first anniversary of Frank’s passing, Amanda walked through the gates of the quiet cemetery overlooking the Cuyahoga Valley.

The sugar maples were ablaze in crimson and gold, their leaves drifting down like glowing embers across the green grass.

Amanda knelt beside her father’s simple granite headstone:

*Frank Miller (1950–2025)*

*“A quiet builder of bridges.”*

Amanda reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, hand-carved block of white oak—a remnant from the very first bench she had installed in the Medina courthouse.

She set the wooden block gently atop the stone.

She looked down at her own hands—strong, scarred, calloused, and capable of creating shelter, dignity, and beauty from the raw timber of the earth.

She was wearing no diamonds. She needed no titles.

""I hear the wood now, Dad,"" Amanda whispered into the autumn breeze, her face radiant with a deep, unshakeable peace. ""The foundation is holding.""

The wind whispered through the tall oak trees above, carrying the scent of rich earth, fallen leaves, and eternal grace.

Amanda stood up, zipped her canvas jacket, and walked back down the hill toward the sound of singing saws and the warm light of the shop.
