Chapter 8 - The Secret Passage to the Cellar

The beam of the tactical flashlight hovered just inches from the bottom of the pantry door, painting a stark, bright line across the dark floorboards. Daniel held his breath, his arm wrapped firmly around Lily’s chest, pressing her face into the fabric of his black suit vest so she wouldn't make a sound. Through the heavy oak panels, the sound of Marcus’s boots slowed down, stopping right outside the threshold. The handle of the pantry door rattled once, twice, testing the latch.

Fortunately, the heavy brass bolt on the outside of the pantry was rusted shut—something the estate manager had neglected to fix for years, and which Daniel had never bothered to inspect. Marcus gave the handle a frustrated yank, muttering a low curse under his breath before his footsteps turned and walked away toward the service stairs leading up to the second floor.

Daniel waited a full three minutes, listening to the rhythmic fading of the boots against the distant floorboards, before he gently pushed the pantry door open a crack. The main kitchen was empty, illuminated only by the pale moonlight spilling through the high windows overlooking the overgrown vegetable garden.

"We need to move, Lily," Daniel whispered, standing up and pulling the little girl out of the pantry. "We're going down to the old wine cellar."

"Is there a monster down there?" Lily asked softly, her big eyes reflecting the pale moonlight as she clutched the empty floral handbag in her free hand.

"No monsters, just old history," Daniel replied grimly, walking over to the heavy stone hearth in the corner of the kitchen.

He knelt down beside the massive cast-iron fireplace grate, reaching behind the decorative stonework to locate a heavy iron ring set deep into the hearth floor. It was a relic from the 19th century, designed long before the mansion was converted into a modern corporate safehouse. He gripped the ring with both hands and heaved upward. With a heavy, grinding scrape of stone against stone, a hidden trapdoor popped open, revealing a steep, narrow spiral staircase descending pitch-black into the earth below.

A damp, earthy smell drifted up from the depths—the scent of wet stone, old wine, and forgotten secrets.

"Hold onto my coat, Lily, and keep your feet on the edges of the steps," Daniel instructed, pulling a small tactical flashlight out of his suit pocket and clicking it on. A narrow beam of white light cut through the gloom, illuminating the winding stone steps.

As they descended into the cellar, the heavy oak trapdoor above them clicked shut with a muffled, echoing thud, sealing them off from the rest of the house just as a heavy pounding echoed through the kitchen ceiling above—someone was searching the second-floor bedrooms with a battering ram.
