Chapter 10 - The Breach of the Archive

The heavy iron door slammed inward with a deafening clang that rattled the dust off the stone ceiling of the underground archive. Daniel spun around instantly, pushing Lily behind the heavy oak desk and shielding her with his body as he reached inside his vest for the silver pocket watch. The pale green glow of the old computer terminal cast long, skeletal shadows across the narrow room, illuminating the figure stepping out from the darkness of the wine racks.
It wasn't Marcus. It was Victoria.
Her white satin gown was stained with mud at the hem, and her sparkling diamond necklace hung slightly crooked against her throat, but her face wore an expression of absolute, unhinged triumph. In her right hand, she held a heavy iron fireplace poker, its tip dark with rust and dirt.
"Did you really think your grandfather’s little panic room was off-limits to me, Daniel?" Victoria sneered, her voice echoing sharply off the damp stone walls. "I lived in this house for seven years while you played corporate savior. I signed the maintenance contracts. I know every brick, every wire, and every lock in this mausoleum."
"Put the poker down, Victoria," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a lethal, controlled register as he stepped out from behind the desk, placing himself squarely between her and Lily. "The federal marshals have already received the automated packet from the gateway server upstairs. If you touch us, the encrypted files go live to the DOJ within sixty seconds."
Victoria laughed—a sharp, high-pitched sound that held no amusement, only bitter desperation. "There are no marshals coming, Daniel. Marcus disabled the main relay tower outside the gates twenty minutes ago. You are completely isolated, cut off, and buried a hundred feet beneath the earth with a child who doesn't even legally exist."
She took two slow steps forward, the iron poker dragging along the rough stone floor with a harsh, grating screech that made Lily whimper softly behind the desk.
"That girl is a fiction," Victoria hissed, pointing the poker directly at Daniel’s chest. "Sarah died in that fire ten years ago. The baby died in the delivery room. Whatever street urchin you dragged in here tonight is just a pawn you bought to steal my share of the estate. And I am going to end this charade right here, right now."
Daniel didn't flinch. He reached down slowly, his fingers closing around the micro-SD card still resting in the card reader on the desk. He slipped it into his palm, keeping his eyes locked on Victoria’s insane, dilated pupils.
"You signed the adoption papers under duress, Victoria," Daniel said softly. "And the medical records on that screen prove you injected Sarah with the paralytic agent that caused the premature labor. You didn't just steal my company; you murdered my wife in slow motion."
May you like
Victoria lunged forward with a sudden, animalistic shriek, swinging the iron poker in a vicious arc toward Daniel’s head.
