Chapter 13 - The Unraveling of the Syndicate

By sunrise, the grand estate was surrounded by unmarked federal vehicles, mobile crime labs, and swarms of investigative agents in dark windbreakers. The media had already caught wind of the raid, and news vans lined the outer iron gates, their satellite dishes pointed toward the sky like mechanical vultures waiting to feast on the carcass of the billionaire dynasty.
Daniel sat in the back of a black SUV parked near the front courtyard, holding a steaming cup of black coffee that a sympathetic paramedic had handed him. Lily was curled up asleep on the passenger seat beside him, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her floral handbag resting safely on her lap like a pillow. The heavy stress of the past twenty-four hours had finally caught up with her, and her breathing was slow, deep, and entirely peaceful.
The side door of the SUV slid open, and Special Agent Miller—a weary-looking veteran of the federal white-collar crime division—climbed in, shaking the morning mist off his shoulders. He handed Daniel a thick manila folder stamped with red classification seals.
"Your digital ledger checked out, Daniel," Agent Miller said, pulling out a cigarette before remembering where he was and putting it back in his pocket. "The encryption keys matched the ones used by your late grandfather’s firm in the seventies. We executed simultaneous raids on Marcus Vance’s offshore accounts in the Caymans and Zurich about twenty minutes ago. Every single asset tied to the shell companies has been frozen by court order."
"And Victoria?" Daniel asked, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.
"She’s currently being booked at the federal holding facility downtown," Miller replied, glancing out the window toward the grand mansion where uniformed officers were carrying out boxes of documents and computer hardware. "She refused to speak without counsel, but Marcus was already singing a different tune before we even got him into the squad car. He’s turning state's evidence to avoid a maximum-security sentence. He handed over the medical facility logs from ten years ago."
Daniel opened the manila folder. Inside were certified copies of the original birth records, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Sarah had given birth to a healthy baby girl—a girl named Lily—before Victoria and Marcus orchestrated her confinement in a private sanitarium to seize control of the family trust.
"Where is she?" Daniel whispered, his eyes lingering on a handwritten medical note signed by Sarah on the day of her transfer. "The records show she was moved out of the sanitarium five years ago. Did Marcus say where they took her?"

Agent Miller hesitated, his expression turning grim as he pulled a final, single photograph from the bottom of the folder and laid it across Daniel’s knees.
