Chapter 14 - The Final Piece of the Puzzle

The photograph resting on Daniel’s knees was a faded polaroid taken outside an old, weathered stone cottage nestled somewhere along the rugged coastline of Maine. In the center of the frame stood a woman with long brown hair and tired, beautiful eyes, wearing a faded blue sweater that Daniel remembered buying her during their honeymoon in Nantucket. It was Sarah. She looked older, thinner, and fragile, but she was alive—or at least, she had been when the picture was snapped twelve months ago.

Daniel’s fingers grazed the glossy surface of the polaroid, a sudden wave of overwhelming emotion threatening to break the iron control he had maintained throughout the entire ordeal.

"She wasn't killed in the fire, Daniel," Agent Miller said quietly, watching his reaction closely. "Marcus and Victoria kept her isolated in a private coastal facility under a false medical identity to prevent her from ever contesting the estate execution. When the funding was slashed last year, the facility was shut down, and the patients were relocated."

"Relocated where?" Daniel demanded, his voice suddenly sharp, the calm billionaire facade shattering completely as he gripped the edge of the folder.

"That's the problem," Miller sighed, tapping the corner of the photograph. "The facility’s administrator burned the paper trails before the federal warrant arrived. According to the digital logs we recovered from Marcus’s secondary server, Sarah was transferred to an independent hospice care center in coastal Maine three days ago—right before Victoria received notice that the family trust was being audited."

Daniel looked down at Lily, who stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring something unintelligible before settling back into the wool blanket. He gently stroked her brown hair, feeling the fierce, protective instinct surge through his veins with the force of a tidal wave.

"Get me a private flight to Portland, Maine, Agent Miller," Daniel commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a man who had nothing left to lose and everything in the world to reclaim. "Now."

Miller nodded, pulling his phone from his pocket. "The jet is already fueled and waiting at the private airstrip ten minutes from here. I’ve assigned two federal agents to accompany you. But Daniel—be prepared. If the medical notes are accurate, you don't have much time."

Daniel pocketed the polaroid, sliding it right next to the silver pocket watch and the micro-SD card. He looked out the window of the SUV as the first rays of the morning sun finally broke through the heavy gray clouds, bathing the grand estate in a brilliant, golden light that could no longer hide the shadows of the past.

As the SUV's engine roared to life and pulled away from the curb toward the private airstrip, a black unmarked envelope slipped out from the back pocket of the manila folder and fluttered silently onto the floorboards, revealing a handwritten note addressed in Sarah's unmistakable handwriting: If you are reading this, Daniel, it means our daughter found her way home—and the truth is finally waiting at the end of the road.
