Chapter 3 - Shadows in the East Wing

The heavy oak door of the east wing clicked shut with a muffled, decisive thud that echoed through the long, dimly lit corridor. Victoria paced across the imported Persian rug, her white satin gown whispering against the floorboards like a restless spirit. Her mind raced through a thousand frantic scenarios, calculating damages, liabilities, and the ultimate destruction of everything she had fought to secure. For ten years, she had played the role of the devoted, grieving stepmother to a phantom, secure in the knowledge that the past was buried beneath millions of dollars and layers of corporate silence. Now, a mud-stained seven-year-old had torn open the vault.

She walked over to the antique writing desk tucked into the alcove, unlocked a hidden drawer with a small brass key, and pulled out an encrypted satellite phone. Her fingers shook as she dialed a number that wasn't stored in any contact list—a number memorized out of sheer paranoia. It rang twice before a raspy, dispassionate voice answered on the other end, devoid of any greeting.

"The girl arrived," Victoria said, her voice tight and breathless. "She brought the parchment. Daniel has it. He’s looking at the signature right now."

A long pause stretched across the secure line, filled only with the faint static of digital encryption. When the voice finally spoke, it carried the chilling weight of absolute indifference. "The package should never have crossed the county line. You had one job when we arranged the relocation in Berlin, Victoria. If Daniel connects the ledger to the foundation, your name goes down on the indictment right beside mine."

"Don't threaten me!" Victoria hissed, pressing the phone so hard against her ear that her knuckles turned white. "If I go down, I am pulling the entire board and every offshore account into the sunlight with me. You need to handle the girl. And you need to handle Daniel before he walks into the downtown office tomorrow morning."

"Handling them is expensive, Victoria," the voice replied smoothly. "And the cost just went up. Check your offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands. Half of it transferred ten minutes ago as a retainer. I'll send someone to the estate before midnight to retrieve that envelope. Make sure the doors are unlocked."

The line clicked dead, leaving Victoria standing alone in the opulent silence of the east wing. She stared at the blank screen of the phone for a long moment before turning slowly toward the tall, arched window overlooking the front gates. Down below, the rain had stopped, but the headlights of a black sedan were just turning onto the private gravel driveway, moving with slow, deliberate purpose toward the main entrance.
