Chapter 4

As Victoria was led away toward the private executive lounge, her dignity dissolving with every dragging step in her high heels, the lobby returned to a heavy, expectant silence. Elena remained standing behind the golden reception desk, her fingers resting lightly on the polished mahogany. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the air fill her lungs without the constriction of anxiety that had defined her months of recovery and planning.

The hotel staff—concierges, bellhops, and front desk agents—stood in a hesitant semicircle a few yards away. They were ordinary people just trying to earn a living, caught in the crossfire of a corporate coup they had never fully understood. Elena looked at them individually, recognizing old faces and noting a few new ones hired during her absence. She knew that fear of sudden unemployment would be their primary emotion right now.

"Listen to me," Elena said, her voice carrying clearly across the marble floor without shouting. "No one’s job is in jeopardy today. If you worked honestly and served our guests with integrity, your position is secure. My father built this hotel to be a home away from home, not a stage for embezzlement and social climbing. We are going to clean house, starting from the top down, but the foundation remains yours."

A collective exhale rippled through the group. The young bellhop who had carried Victoria’s luggage just hours earlier nodded slowly, a look of profound relief washing over his features. They had feared a tyrannical purge; instead, they were being offered continuity and justice. Elena picked up her silver smartphone, tucked it into the back pocket of her jeans, and walked out from behind the desk to meet with the arriving legal and law enforcement teams currently pushing through the revolving glass doors.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cut sharp angles across the city skyline, casting long shadows over the entrance of the Grand Horizon. Two unmarked police cruisers idled curbside, their emergency lights flashing silently against the stone facade. Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with the financial crimes division who had worked closely with Elena’s father for decades, stepped out of the lead vehicle. He adjusted his trench coat and walked up the steps, meeting Elena right at the threshold where she had been shoved to the floor less than an hour ago.
