Chapter 3

Stepping behind the golden reception desk felt to Elena like stepping into a ghost ship she had once captained. The computer terminals hummed quietly, recognizing her biometric thumbprint instantly upon contact with the master console, a security feature Victoria had never managed to delete despite her best efforts with outsourced IT consultants. As the system welcomed Elena back by her full legal name, the digital displays flickered and updated across every lobby screen, replacing the promotional images of Victoria’s curated galas with verified corporate records.

Victoria broke free from Marcus’s grip with a desperate surge of adrenaline, lunging toward the desk like a cornered animal. "Turn that off! You have no right! You signed those shares over voluntarily! You were unstable!"

Elena did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to match Victoria’s escalating hysteria. She simply turned her head slightly, her gaze cool and detached. "Voluntarily? You had me committed to a private clinic in upstate New York under a falsified psychiatric hold while I was recovering from the car crash that killed my father. You forged the power of attorney while I was heavily sedated, Victoria. The medical board and the state prosecutor’s office have been reviewing those files for the past six months. Today is simply the day the paperwork catches up with reality."

The surrounding hotel guests, who had gathered near the velvet ropes of the entrance, began murmuring among themselves. Smartphones were raised, recording the dramatic downfall of the woman who had reigned over the city's high society for two years. Victoria froze, her hands hovering inches from the desk, the reality of her prison closing in around her not with iron bars, but with the quiet click of a closing digital archive. Her elegant white dress suddenly felt less like armor and more like a shroud.

Marcus stepped between Victoria and the desk, his expression hardened with professional disappointment. He had believed her lies, trusting the charming facade because it came with a generous paycheck and a prestigious title. Now, looking at the bruised yet resolute face of the true heir, Marcus understood the gravity of his complicity. He placed a heavy, respectful hand on Victoria’s shoulder, guiding her backward away from the console.

"Please, Ms. Vance," Marcus said quietly, using Victoria's birth surname rather than the fabricated Horizon title she had adopted. "Let's wait for the authorities in the lounge. Making a scene here will only compound the legal liabilities."
