Chapter 4 - The Digital Confession

The tiny silver flash drive glinted in the hallway light, held between Mark’s trembling, sweat-slicked fingers. Elena’s eyes locked onto the object, and all the color drained from her face, leaving her stark against the dark velvet of her dress.
"Mark, don't you dare," Elena hissed, lunging forward with a speed that startled everyone in the room.
Julian reacted instantly, stepping between Elena and Mark with athletic precision, blocking her path with a single, firm arm. Elena slammed against his chest, gasping in outrage as she tried to shove him away.
"Keep your hands off me, you imposter!" Elena shrieked, her carefully cultivated composure completely shattering.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Julian said calmly, his eyes remaining as cold as winter stone. "Assaulting a federal investigator tends to look very poor in front of a probate judge."
"Federal investigator?" Clara repeated, the phone still clutched in her hand, where Arthur Henderson's voice was now shouting faint questions from the speaker.
Mark seized the moment of distraction, scurrying over to Clara and pressing the flash drive into her open palm. His eyes were wide with terror, filled with the desperate look of a man who had realized too late that he had chained himself to a sinking ship.
"It's all on there, Clara," Mark whispered frantically, his voice barely audible over Elena's continued curses. "Every transaction. Every forged signature on the trust amendments. Elena didn't just manipulate the lawyers; she used corporate shell companies to drain the Vance family accounts over the last eighteen months. I just executed the paperwork, but she planned every bit of it."
Clara looked down at the tiny piece of plastic in her hand. This little drive held the blueprint of her family's destruction, orchestrated by the niece she had raised like a daughter after her sister's passing.
"You stole from us," Clara said softly, looking up at Elena with a grief so profound it transcended anger. "After everything I gave you. After putting you through university, buying your first car, trusting you with the keys to this estate..."
"You were living in the past!" Elena screamed, abandoning all pretense of polite society as she writhed against Julian’s grip. "You and Uncle Thomas were hoarding a dying legacy! This estate is worth millions, and you were just going to let it sit here rotting while I had to scrape by on a pittance!"
"It was never about the money for you, was it?" Julian asked, his voice dangerously low. He turned Elena around effortlessly, pinning her wrists behind her back with practiced restraint as she kicked and thrashed.
"Let me go!" Elena sobbed, genuine tears of frustration finally breaking through her mascara. "This house is mine! The judge signed the temporary restraining order against Clara this morning! You're trespassing!"
Julian didn't answer. Instead, he reached into his own pocket and pulled out an official badge, flashing it in front of Elena’s tear-streaked face.

"Special Agent Julian Vance, IRS Criminal Investigation Division," Julian said smoothly. "We've been tracking these shell companies for six months. And you just admitted to conspiracy and fraud on record."
