Chapter 13 - The Federal Trap

The crisp rustle of the court document in Julian’s hands sounded like tearing metal in the quiet morning air. He scanned the dense legal jargon, his eyes darting across code numbers, federal statutes, and corporate entity names that made his face grow paler with every second.
"This is impossible," Julian muttered, shaking his head. "I audited the primary ledger myself. There were no defense contractor ties in the 2021 filings."
"Because they weren't filed under Vance Holdings, Julian," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a cold, clinical register. "They were funneled through a subsidiary shell company managed by an offshore proxy. And guess who signed off on the proxy authorization twenty-four hours before Thomas had his stroke?"
Clara stepped closer, her hand gripping the wooden railing of the veranda for support. "Who?"
Marcus looked directly at Clara, his eyes devoid of any warmth. "You did, Clara. Your signature is on the secondary power-of-attorney release, dated three days before you were sent to the recovery facility."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Clara staggered backward, the remaining coffee in her cup sloshing over the rim and splashing onto the wooden floorboards. "My signature? That's a lie. I never signed any defense contract authorization. I didn't even know Thomas had business dealings outside of our local milling investments."
"Fraud is a versatile tool, Clara," Marcus replied smoothly. "Elena may have been the one pulling the strings locally, but someone taught her how to structure the offshore accounts without tripping the federal wiretaps. Someone with high-level clearance inside the Treasury Department."
Julian whipped his head around, staring at his superior with undisguised horror and fury. "You. You set this up. You knew about the defense contracts all along, and you used Elena’s embezzlement as a smoke screen to force a federal asset seizure so you could acquire the Vance estate pennies on the dollar!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply buttoned his trench coat, adjusting his fedora with calm, deliberate movements. "I'm a federal bureau chief, Julian. I protect national interests. And a sprawling, mismanaged historical estate like Brentwood House is better utilized as a federal asset than a private museum for a bitter widow and a resentful son."
"You won't get away with this," Clara said, her voice trembling with a righteous fury that cut through the morning mist. "I survived fifty years of Thomas's secrets, and I survived Elena's betrayal. I will not let you steal my home with a fabricated signature."
"You have forty-eight hours, Clara," Marcus said, turning on his heel and walking down the veranda steps toward his idling sedan. "The federal seizure order is already logged into the central database. By tomorrow morning, the marshals will be back to lock the front doors permanently."
May you like
The car door slammed shut, and the sedan sped down the gravel driveway, leaving Clara and Julian standing in the cold dawn light, staring at a trap that had just snapped shut around them with terrifying precision.
