Chapter 2 - The Hidden Clause

The grandfather clock in the foyer ticked with a slow, agonizing rhythm that seemed to mock the tension hanging in the air. Clara stood her ground, her hand dipping into the deep pocket of her beige jacket to retrieve her heavy, old-fashioned mobile phone. The screen flickered to life, casting a pale glow across her lined face.
Elena uncrossed her arms, stepping away from the parlor door with a sudden, jerky movement. The confidence in her dark velvet dress faltered for a fraction of a second as she watched Clara’s thumb hover over the speed dial.
"Go ahead and call," Elena bluffed, though a bead of sweat formed near her temple. "Call old man Henderson. Tell him your sob story. See if his law firm answers your calls after the documents we filed this morning at the county clerk's office."
Mark shifted his weight from foot to foot, his green sweater clinging to his damp back. He cleared his throat nervously. "Elena, maybe we shouldn't have... maybe we should check the secondary registry first. Just to be safe."
Elena whipped her head around, glaring at Mark with absolute fury. "Shut your mouth, Mark. You did what you were paid to do. The registry is closed. The deed is in my name, signed, sealed, and legally binding."
Clara ignored their bickering. She pressed the button, holding the phone to her ear. The dial tone hummed in her ear, steady and uninterrupted. After three rings, a familiar, gruff voice answered.
"Henderson here."
"Arthur, it's Clara," she said, her voice clear and commanding. "I need you at Brentwood House immediately. There's been an illegal lockout, and my signature has been forged on a trust amendment."
A sharp intake of breath whistled through the phone line. "Clara? Where are you? The nursing home called me two hours ago saying you wandered away. And as for the trust... Clara, I need you to come down to the office. We have a major problem with the primary estate ledger."
"I am standing in my own foyer, Arthur," Clara said, her eyes locked onto Elena’s narrowing pupils. "And my niece has locked me out of the master suite. Get over here now."
"Clara, listen to me very carefully," Arthur’s voice dropped to a tense whisper. "Your husband didn't just amend the trust before he passed. He filed a classified codicil twenty-four hours before his stroke. A codicil that names an entirely different primary beneficiary—someone neither you nor Elena have ever met."
Clara’s breath hitched. Her fingers tightened around the phone until her knuckles turned translucent. "What are you talking about, Arthur? Who could possibly be a beneficiary over me?"

Before Arthur could answer from the other end of the line, the heavy front door swung inward again, pushed open by a sharp autumn gust. A tall stranger stepped into the foyer, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with a federal seal.
