Chapter 10 - The Brink of Destruction

The scratching sound of the match head against the abrasive strip sounded deafeningly loud in the cavernous, dust-choked attic. A tiny spark flared to life, casting a flickering, orange glow across Elena’s distorted, sweat-streaked face.

"Elena, listen to me," Clara said, stepping past Julian into the threshold of the attic, ignoring the younger man's whispered warning to stay back. Clara’s voice was remarkably steady, carrying a quiet authority that cut through the sound of the howling wind outside. "Put the matches down. You are thirty years old. Your entire life is ahead of you. Is a rotting house and stolen money really worth spending the next twenty years behind bars?"

Elena’s hand trembled, the flame dancing perilously close to the corner of a dry cardboard box filled with old tax documents. "You don't understand, Aunt Clara. I'm ruined. The debts I accrued using your credit... the high-interest loans I took out to maintain this lifestyle... if the federal audits hit my personal accounts, I'll lose everything anyway. Prison is the only place left."

"Prison is a choice of how you spend your time," Julian said, his flashlight beam locked steadily on Elena’s hands while his finger rested lightly on the trigger guard of his sidearm. "Running away and burning evidence is a choice to throw away whatever dignity you have left. Drop the box, Elena."

For a heart-stopping second, nobody moved. The rain lashed furiously against the round gable window, and the wind rattled the old wooden frames. Elena looked down at the tiny flame, then across at Clara’s unblinking, stern gaze. A single tear cut a clean path through the dirt on her cheek.

With a muffled sob of sheer defeat, Elena blew out the match. The tiny spark died instantly, leaving only the dim amber glow of Julian’s flashlight cutting through the gloom. Elena dropped the heavy metal lockbox to the dusty floorboards with a dull, heavy thud, sliding down against a stack of old steamer trunks and burying her face in her hands.

Julian stepped forward quickly, holstering his weapon as he reached down and yanked the metal box away from her reach, kicking the scattered matches safely across the floor. He grabbed Elena by the arm, pulling her roughly to her feet and cuffing her wrists behind her back with a pair of cold steel restraints that clicked with chilling finality.

"Elena Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, extortion, and destruction of evidence," Julian recited smoothly, reading her rights with clinical detachment as she sagged limply against him.

Clara walked over slowly, looking down at the heavy metal lockbox resting on the dusty floor. She knelt down, her knees aching with the effort, and popped the clasp with her bare fingers. Inside lay a collection of deeds, original stock certificates, and personal jewelry belonging to her mother—valuables Elena had methodically stripped from the family vault over the past year.

"It's all here," Clara murmured, looking up at Julian as he hauled Elena toward the attic stairs.

"Most of it," Julian replied grimly, dragging the sobbing woman away. "Wait downstairs, Clara. I'm calling local dispatch and the federal transport unit. We're going to wrap this up tonight."
