Chapter 3 - The Stranger at the Door

The stranger was a man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the rustic charm of Brentwood House. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, and his expression was completely unreadable. He paused on the threshold, his sharp eyes sweeping over the tense tableau: Clara holding her phone with a look of stunned revelation, Elena frozen in the middle of the hallway, and Mark shrinking back against the wall like a whipped dog.

"Clara Vance?" the man asked, his voice deep and resonant.

Clara slowly lowered her phone, though the line to Arthur Henderson remained open. "I am. Who are you?"

"My name is Julian Vance," the man replied, stepping fully into the foyer and closing the heavy door behind him with a solid click. "I believe I am your late husband’s son. And legally speaking, I own half of this house."

The silence that followed was absolute. Elena let out a sharp gasp, her velvet dress rustling as she stumbled backward. "That's impossible! Arthur never mentioned a son! My uncle didn't have any other children!"

Julian didn't even look at Elena. His gaze remained fixed on Clara, filled with a complex mixture of sorrow and bitter resentment. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a certified birth certificate alongside a series of legal acknowledgments signed by Clara's late husband just days before his death.

Clara stared at the documents, her legs suddenly feeling weak. Fifty years of marriage, fifty years of shared secrets, triumphs, and quiet sorrows—and yet, a massive, life-altering secret had apparently been hidden from her right up until the grave.

"Julian," Clara whispered, the name feeling foreign and heavy on her tongue. "If this is true... why am I only finding out now?"

"Because your late husband was a coward," Julian said harshly, stepping closer. "He abandoned my mother thirty-five years ago, paid her off to keep quiet, and lived his comfortable life here in Brentwood while we struggled in poverty. But before he died, he grew a conscience. He left instructions in that codicil Arthur Henderson is holding on the phone."

Elena found her voice, her face contorting with rage as she pointed a manicured finger at Julian. "Get out! Both of you! This is my inheritance! The courts gave this estate to me based on the 2021 deed!"

"The 2021 deed was revoked by the 2024 codicil, cousin," Julian said coldly, finally turning his piercing gaze onto Elena. "Which means neither you nor I have full control until the probate court reviews the primary asset distribution."

Mark pressed himself flat against the wood-paneled wall, his breathing ragged. He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket, holding it out toward Clara with a shaking hand. "Clara... the digital ledger isn't what Elena thinks it is. There's a hidden folder."
