Chapter 8: The Morning of Reckoning

The morning sun cut through the towering stained-glass windows of the Ashwood Manor boardroom, casting long, fractured beams of ruby and gold across the polished mahogany table. Twenty-four leather chairs surrounded the massive oval, yet only a handful were occupied. The atmosphere was thick with tension, smelling of stale black coffee and corporate anxiety.

Elena sat at the head of the table, her dark blazer pristine, her posture rigidly controlled. To her right sat Arthur Vance, his rugged presence a jarring contrast to the tailored corporate suits of the remaining board members. Little Lily was not in the room; she was safely tucked away in the private nursery upstairs under the watchful eye of a trusted family nanny.

Marcus Thorne sat near the far end, his face pale and drawn, his fingers nervously tapping a silver pen against the wood. He had attempted to block the meeting at dawn, but Arthur’s unassailable legal filings had forced the board’s hand.

"The emergency session of the Vance Global Board of Directors will now come to order," Elena announced, her voice echoing clearly off the mahogany-paneled walls. "We are here to vote on the restructuring of the executive committee and the validation of the primary trust deed."

A murmur rippled through the room. Several board members, long accustomed to voting in lockstep with Beatrice’s dictates, exchanged uneasy glances. One of them, an elderly man named Henderson who had served under the matriarch for thirty years, cleared his throat loudly.

"Mrs. Vance, while we acknowledge the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Julian’s sudden absence, the company cannot operate under a cloud of ongoing litigation," Henderson said, adjusting his spectacles. "Without Beatrice present to cast her controlling proxy, we move to table this vote for sixty days and appoint an interim external receiver."

"That motion is out of order," Arthur interjected smoothly, leaning forward and resting his weathered hands on the table. He slid a crisp, notarized document across the polished wood toward Henderson. "Section four of the corporate charter clearly states that in the event of an executive incapacity or federal detention of the primary shareholder, proxy rights automatically revert to the senior surviving bloodline."

Henderson glanced down at the paper, his eyes widening as he recognized the official seal of the state supreme court. "This... this was filed at 4:00 AM this morning."

"At 4:01 AM, my brother’s estate was officially reinstated," Arthur said, his voice hard as iron. "Which means Elena holds fifty-one percent of the voting block. The vote isn't up for debate, Henderson. It’s a formality."

Marcus Thorne slammed his pen down onto the table, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the floor. "This is a coup! Arthur Vance was legally declared a fugitive from financial regulations in three separate jurisdictions twenty years ago! His signature is entirely invalid!"

Elena stood up to meet Marcus’s outburst, her eyes flashing with absolute authority. "Check your emails, Marcus. The international arrest warrant issued against Arthur in 2004 was formally vacated by a federal judge at midnight, thanks to the evidence Julian tried to bury."

The room erupted into overlapping shouts as three board members pulled out their tablets, frantically refreshing their corporate news feeds.

Marcus stared at Elena, his professional facade completely shattered, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. "You planned this. All of it. You used the child as bait to draw us out."

May you like

"No, Marcus," Elena said softly, stepping around the head of the table. "You used the child to secure your own greed. And now, your career is over."

Before Marcus could reply, the heavy boardroom doors swung wide open, and two police officers in full uniform stepped inside, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
