Chapter 6: The Frozen Assets and the Missing Heir

The blue glow of the computer monitor cast long, skeletal shadows across the walls of the private study as Elena stared down at her glowing phone screen. The bank notification was definitive. Every operational account, every subsidiary reserve, and even the personal trust fund set aside for Lily’s education had been locked tight under an emergency injunction filed not by the federal prosecutors, but by a mysterious Cayman Islands shell corporation.
"Surprised?" Marcus Thorne asked, his voice dripping with a calculated, oily satisfaction as he straightened his tie. "You thought you had dismantled the Vance empire by handing Julian over to the feds. But empires like this don't run on checking accounts, Elena. They run on shadow liquidity."
Elena forced her breathing to remain even, refusing to let the polished corporate shark see the panic threatening to tear her chest apart. She locked her phone and slipped it into the pocket of her blazer, meeting his gaze with unyielding steel.
"You think freezing the accounts stops me?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. "Julian is facing twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud, and your firm’s name is listed right beside his on the offshore transfer logs I handed to Agent Miller. The moment the morning news breaks, your partners are going to throw you to the wolves to save their own licenses."
Marcus’s calm facade flickered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing as he realized Elena hadn’t surrendered all her evidence to the federal agents. He took a half-step back, his professional demeanor tightening.
"You're playing a very dangerous game, Elena," Marcus warned, his voice losing its polite edge. "Without funds, you can't pay the estate staff, you can't maintain the property, and you certainly can't hire representation when my firm petitions the probate court tomorrow morning to declare you an unfit guardian for that little girl."
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. Mentioning Lily was a line he never should have crossed. Before she could lunge across the desk, the heavy oak door of the study swung wide open, revealing little Lily standing in the doorway. The little girl was rubbing her eyes, clutching a half-torn piece of her school certificate in one small hand.
"Mommy?" Lily whimpered softly, her voice trembling in the quiet night air. "There are strange men outside my window."

Elena vaulted over the side of the desk, dropping to her knees in front of her daughter and pulling her tightly into her arms. She looked up toward the dark hallway, her breath catching in her throat as she saw a heavy shadow detach itself from the wall near the grand staircase.
Marcus smirked, turning toward the doorway. "Like I said, Elena... you missed one crucial player."
