Chapter 1: The Broken Crest and the Bitter Truth

The grand foyer of Ashwood Manor echoed with the sharp rustle of heavy parchment being torn apart. Beatrice Vance, her silver hair pinned into an immaculate bun, stood over trembling little Lily with an expression carved from flint. Beatrice wore a cream satin blouse that caught the cold morning light, looking every bit the matriarch of an empire built on ruthless ambition. At her side stood Julian, his arms crossed, watching the child with an icy indifference that matched his mother’s.

On the polished marble floor lay the scattered fragments of a white certificate stamped with a shimmering blue crest. Lily dropped to her knees, her blonde hair bouncing in twin pigtails as silent tears cut tracks through the dust on her cheeks. She reached out with a small, trembling hand to touch the ruined paper.

"You are not our blood," Beatrice said, her voice dropping into a register that chilled the air.

"But it's my first day," Lily whispered softly, her lower lip trembling as she clutched a scrap of the blue-stamped paper.

Suddenly, the double wooden doors flew open, crashing against the mahogany wainscoting. Elena Vance strode through, her dark blazer snapping around her knees like a flag in a gale. She clutched a leather briefcase to her chest, her eyes blazing with a mother’s primal fury. She stopped dead as she saw her daughter huddled on the floor among the debris of her childhood milestone.

"What did you do to my daughter?" Elena demanded sharply, her voice cutting through the cavernous room like a scalpel.

Beatrice didn’t flinch. She simply tilted her chin higher. "We merely corrected a mistake, Elena. That child carries no Vance blood. She has no claim to this house, this name, or that school."

Elena dropped to her knees beside Lily, scooping the weeping girl into her arms. She buried her face in Lily’s blonde pigtails, rocking her gently while shooting a glare of pure venom at the two adults towering above them.

"Grandma said I don't belong," Lily sobbed into her mother’s dark blazer, the sound breaking Elena’s heart.

Elena stood up slowly, her movements deliberate and terrifyingly calm. She unzipped her leather briefcase and pulled out a pristine, heavy parchment document encased in a leather folder, holding it open for them to see.

"This school is Lily's. So is this house. So is the company. Both of you, get out," Elena said firmly.

Julian scoffed, stepping forward. "You think a piece of paper frightens us?"

Elena stepped closer, her eyes locked onto Julian’s as she revealed the signature at the bottom. "It’s not just a paper, Julian. It’s the final audit. And it shows you embezzled millions."
