Chapter 13: The Governor’s Seal

The silver tray gleamed under the boardroom lights as the elderly butler stepped carefully across the polished marble floor, stopping respectfully beside Elena. On the tray rested a thick, cream-colored envelope sealed in crimson wax bearing the unmistakable imprint of the state governor’s official office.
Elena gently set Lily down on a nearby chair, handing her a small box of colored pencils to keep her occupied, before taking the heavy envelope from the tray. She broke the wax seal with her thumb and unfolded the single sheet of embossed stationery inside.
Arthur leaned in close, reading over her shoulder. "What is it?"
"It’s an executive pardon review," Elena whispered, her eyes scanning the formal legal text. "Or rather, a denial of emergency appeal. The state attorney general’s office has officially rejected Beatrice, Julian, and Christian’s joint petition to block the estate transfer."
Henderson let out a long, audible sigh of relief, sinking back into his leather chair. "Well. That settles it. Elena folded the letter and placed it carefully inside her leather briefcase. She turned back to face the table, her dark blazer catching the light as she assumed her rightful position at the head of the room.
"The emergency session is adjourned," Elena announced clearly. "Our first official act as the new administration will be the establishment of the Vance Foundation for Educational Equity—funded directly by the recovered assets from Julian and Christian’s offshore accounts."
As the board members began to gather their papers and file out of the room in hushed silence, Arthur walked over to Elena, a genuine smile finally breaking through his weathered features.
"You actually did it, Elena," Arthur said quietly. "You took down the entire dynasty without firing a single shot—just by refusing to let them break your daughter."
"I didn't do it alone," Elena replied, looking over at Lily, who was happily coloring a picture of a blue-crested school crest on the back of a spare legal pad. "We survived because we had truth on our side. And because some things are worth fighting for."

Just as the last board member exited the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind them, the soft chime of a grandfather clock echoed down the grand hallway. But before the final echo could fade, a sharp, urgent rapping sounded at the private side entrance leading fr
