Chapter 10: The Return of the Prodigal Son

The black limousine sat idling just beyond the wrought-iron security gates of Ashwood Manor, its tinted windows reflecting the morning light like obsidian shields. Arthur Vance stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling window of the boardroom, his rugged face tightening into a hard line as he watched a tall, familiar figure step out of the vehicle and adjust the lapels of a bespoke Italian suit.
"Who is that?" Elena asked, walking over with Lily still resting comfortably on her hip. She followed Arthur’s intense gaze and felt the breath catch in her throat. "That’s... that can't be. Julian is in federal custody."
"Not Julian," Arthur murmured grimly, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the wooden window frame. "That’s our middle brother, Christian. The one Beatrice sent away to the London branch twenty years ago after he made the mistake of trying to audit the family's illicit real estate holdings."
The heavy boardroom doors pushed open without a knock. Christian Vance strode into the room with an effortless, predatory grace that instantly commanded the space. He looked remarkably like Julian, but without the nervous arrogance; Christian possessed a cold, terrifying intelligence that made him infinitely more dangerous.
"Good morning, family," Christian said smoothly, his British accent cutting through the silence of the room like a silver blade. He stopped ten feet from the table, his dark eyes scanning the room before landing squarely on Elena and the little girl in her arms. "I see the rats are finally clearing out of the sinking ship."
Elena adjusted her hold on Lily, stepping forward to place herself firmly between Christian and her daughter. "You have no jurisdiction here, Christian. The board has just voted to reinstate Arthur and myself as the primary executors of the Vance estate."
Christian let out a low, melodic chuckle. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a thick leather folio embossed with a gold family crest, and tossed it casually onto the mahogany table where Marcus’s pen had just fallen.
"Jurisdiction, my dear Elena, is a matter of capital," Christian replied, walking slowly around the table as if inspecting a museum exhibit. "When Beatrice realized Julian was an incompetent fool who would eventually ruin everything, she quietly transferred fifty percent of her non-voting shares into an overseas trust managed exclusively by me. Which means legally, I hold the veto power over every single decision this board makes."
Henderson, the elderly board member who had tried to delay the morning session, slumped back in his chair with a groan of pure defeat. "The non-voting trust... Good god, it was a shadow reserve all along."
Christian stopped walking and turned his piercing gaze directly onto Arthur. "Hello, brother. I heard you died in a fiery plane crash in South America. Must have been a miraculous recovery."
"Miraculous enough to put you and Julian both away if I decide to audit your London accounts, Christian," Arthur retorted, stepping between Christian and Elena with a predatory stillness of his own.
Christian didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, predatory smile spread across his face. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a single, folded piece of paper, holding it up between two fingers like a winning poker card.

"You can audit all you like, Arthur," Christian said softly. "But before you do, you might want to look at the adoption papers Beatrice forged thirty years ago. Papers that legally prove Elena’s late husband—your own brother—wasn't a biological Vance at all."
The room went dead silent. Elena froze, her blood turning to ice as she stared at Christian in absolute horror.
