Chapter 5 - A Silence That Suffocates

The baby’s sudden, sharp gasp pierced the heavy atmosphere of the foyer, instantly erasing the triumph of the DA’s phone call. Julian looked down, his heart leaping into his throat as he saw the infant’s face turning a dangerous, mottled shade of blue. The blue blanket slipped slightly, revealing the pale, motionless chest of the newborn. All pretense of legal battles, estate clauses, and family vendettas vanished in an instant, replaced by the primal terror of a parent watching a child struggle for air.
"Get an ambulance here now!" Julian shouted, dropping all restraint as he spun around, holding the baby up to the light to check its airways. "He’s stopping breathing!"
The younger officer immediately unclipped his radio, barking code numbers into the receiver while rushing toward the front doors to flag down the incoming patrol units. Eleanor remained on her knees by the stairs, her expression frozen in a mixture of shock and lingering malice, unable to comprehend that the chess pieces she had moved with such precision were suddenly crumbling into dust.
"You caused this," Julian snarled at her, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic as he patted the infant’s back with desperate, measured taps. "Your coldness, your games, this house—it’s poison."
"It’s a weak constitution," Eleanor spat back defensively, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. "Children born in the gutter don't survive the winter air of a real home."
Julian ignored her, focusing entirely on the tiny, fragile body in his arms. He remembered the first-aid training he had taken months ago in anticipation of this exact day, praying his hands wouldn’t betray him. He supported the baby’s head, tilted it forward, and delivered a gentle, firm thrust between the shoulder blades.
A tiny cough broke the silence, followed by a weak, reedy wail that sounded like the sweetest music Julian had ever heard in his life. The baby drew in a deep, shuddering breath, the pink color slowly returning to his tiny cheeks as his little fists curled into the fabric of Julian’s black shirt.
"That's it, stay with me," Julian whispered, pressing his cheek against the baby’s soft, warm head, letting out a long breath he felt he had been holding for years.
The lead officer stepped back inside, sliding his radio onto his belt. "Paramedics are two minutes out, Mr. Vance. They’re bringing an incubator unit."
Julian nodded, holding the baby tight against his chest as he turned to face Eleanor, who was finally struggling to her feet with the aid of the mahogany banister. She looked older now, the harsh overhead light exposing every wrinkle and crack in her carefully maintained facade.
"You think you’ve won because the baby breathed, Julian?" Eleanor muttered, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper as she leaned heavily against the stair post. "You don't know what my husband hid in the basement safe before he died."

Julian froze, sensing that the nightmare was far from over.
