Chapter 3 - Shadows at the Threshold

The beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the gloom of the foyer, blinding Julian momentarily as heavy footsteps echoed on the stone porch. Two figures in dark uniforms stepped across the threshold, their rain-slicked jackets glistening under the crystal chandelier. Julian stepped back instinctively, shielding the infant with his body, while Eleanor let out a soft, theatrical sigh of relief, slumping back against the staircase as if she were the victim of a brutal assault.
"Police department, we received a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance and a child in danger," the lead officer said, his hand resting casually on his utility belt as his eyes darted from Eleanor on the floor to Julian standing defensively by the door.
"Officer, thank goodness," Eleanor cried out, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility as tears welled in her eyes. "That man broke into my home, attacked me, and abducted my infant grandson!"
Julian stared at her, utterly astounded by the sheer speed and precision of her manipulation. He looked at the two officers, who were now advancing cautiously toward him, their expressions hardening as they assessed the scene.
"That is a complete lie," Julian said, keeping his voice carefully level despite the adrenaline surging through his veins. "I live here. This is my son, and she just tried to let him freeze on the marble floor."
"He’s trespassing, Officer! Look at him, he’s wearing clothes fit for a laborer, not a resident of this house," Eleanor interrupted, pointing a shaking finger at Julian’s plain black shirt. "He forced his way in through the conservatory doors just ten minutes ago."
The younger officer stepped forward, his notepad already out. "Sir, step away from the child and place your hands where we can see them. We need to verify who you are and check the welfare of that infant immediately."
Julian looked down at the baby, who had begun to stir and whimper again at the sound of unfamiliar voices. He knew that if he handed the child over to these officers without context, Eleanor’s influence in the city would ensure that the baby ended up in a state facility by morning. Yet, any sudden movement on his part would be construed as resisting arrest, sealing his fate according to the brutal clause he had just read on the vellum paper.
"I am Julian Vance, and my name is on the birth certificate and the legal trust," Julian said firmly, holding his ground while slowly lifting his empty left hand to show he was unarmed. "Check my identification in my back pocket. I am not leaving my son."
The lead officer stopped two paces away, his eyes narrowing as he recognized Julian’s name. A flicker of recognition crossed the officer’s face, followed by a heavy hesitation that told Julian the local precinct was already well-acquainted with the Vance family name and its dark political ties.
"Mr. Vance," the officer said slowly, stepping closer and reaching out to take the baby from his arms. "Step back. Now."
May you like
Julian opened his mouth to refuse, but before the words could leave his lips, Eleanor’s phone on the bottom stair began to ring with a sharp, insistent chime that cut through the silence like a knife.
