Chapter 1 - The Echo of Broken Promises

The chill of the grand foyer marble bit through the thin fabric of the blue blanket as the newborn infant’s cries bounced off the high vaulted ceilings. Julian knelt on the polished stone, his chest heaving, cradling the small, trembling bundle against his black shirt. Just yards away, Eleanor lay motionless on her back, her maroon dress pooling around her like a pool of dried blood, her eyes wide and glassy, staring blankly at the crystal chandelier above. The cream-colored envelope with the heavy gold crest fluttered down, landing inches from her outstretched, pearl-adorned hand. Julian’s breath came in ragged gasps as he looked down at the woman who had just tried to orchestrate an unthinkable cruelty.
Eleanor shifted slightly, her breathing shallow, breaking the terrifying silence of the vast estate. She turned her head toward him, her face twisting with a mixture of agony and lingering venom, refusing to accept the defeat that lay written in black and white inside the paper.
"You think a piece of paper changes what you are, Julian?" Eleanor hissed, her voice cracking as she clutched her side where she had struck the floor. "You are nothing more than a stain on this family's name, a mistake born in the shadows."
Julian tightened his grip on the baby, feeling the infant’s tiny heart beating frantically against his palm. He glared down at her, his jaw set in rigid defiance.
"My name is right there, Eleanor, legally and irrevocably stamped by the courts," Julian fired back, his voice low and vibrating with suppressed fury. "You thought you could make him disappear just like you tried to make me disappear thirty years ago."
"He doesn't belong here, and neither do you!" Eleanor spat out, a dry cough racking her body as she tried to lift herself up on one elbow. "The estate goes to the true bloodline, not to some beggar off the street who scavenges for scraps!"
"He is my son, and your blood flows through his veins whether you like it or not," Julian retorted, stepping backward toward the heavy oak doors. "Your tyranny in this house ends tonight. I am calling the authorities, and every single dark secret you’ve buried in this mausoleum is coming to light."
Eleanor’s expression shifted from pure hatred to a sudden, chilling calm that made the hairs on the back of Julian’s neck stand up. A faint, mocking smile touched her bleeding lip.
"Go ahead and call them, Julian," Eleanor whispered, her eyes gleaming with a terrifying secret. "Tell them whatever you want, but before you walk out that door, you might want to look at the second page of that envelope."
May you like
Julian froze, his hand hovering over his phone in his pocket as he stared down at the cream-colored paper.
