Chapter 11 - The Uninvited Guest

The splintering crash of the front door echoing through the grand foyer froze Julian in his tracks just as he reached the top of the sub-basement stairs. The flashing red and blue lights from the police cruisers outside painted jagged patterns across the marble floor. Through the shattered threshold stepped a tall, imposing figure in a charcoal trench coat, flanked by two private security guards in plain black tactical gear.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized the man instantly—Marcus Vance, Eleanor’s estranged younger brother, who had supposedly vanished to Zurich twenty years ago after a bitter corporate fallout that nearly bankrupted the family firm.

"Well, well, well," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless, aristocratic arrogance that filled the cavernous room as he stepped over the broken wood of the front door. "It seems mother’s little empire is finally burning to the ground, and here I am just in time for the ash."

"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he planted himself firmly between the newcomer and the sub-basement stairs. "You have no business here. Turn around and walk out."

Marcus stopped ten feet away, a thin, patronizing smile playing across his clean-shaven face. He adjusted his leather gloves with deliberate slowness, his eyes darting past Julian to the open door leading down to the vault.

"My business is family, Julian—or should I say, the liquidation of it," Marcus replied, his gaze shifting toward the female paramedic holding the sleeping baby on the velvet sofa. "And it looks like the next generation is already packed and ready to be sold off to the highest bidder."

"Stay away from my son," Julian warned, stepping forward with his fists clenched at his sides.

Marcus let out a short, cold laugh. "You think you actually own anything here, Julian? You think that little piece of paper Eleanor dropped gives you the keys to the kingdom? While you were busy playing detective with the local police, my legal team was filing an emergency injunction in federal court."

The lead officer emerged from the utility closet behind Julian, his hand resting cautiously on his holster as he sized up Marcus and his private guards. "Sir, identify yourself and state your purpose on this property. This is an active crime scene."

Marcus didn't even bother looking at the officer. He pulled a thick, embossed document from the inside pocket of his trench coat and tossed it carelessly onto the marble floor at Julian’s feet.

"I’m the primary lienholder on every square inch of this estate," Marcus said, his voice hardening as he locked eyes with Julian. "Eleanor took out a multi-million-dollar emergency loan against the trust last month to cover her offshore accounts, and she used my signature to back it."

Julian stared down at the document lying on the cold stone, the bold red lettering catching the light of the flashing police cruisers outside. The signature at the bottom wasn't Eleanor’s. It was his father’s, forged with terrifying precision.

Before Julian could bend down to pick up the paper, the heavy steel door of the sub-basement vault below them suddenly screeched open with a deafening groan.
