Chapter 2 - The Second Page

The heavy oak front door drifted open an inch, letting in a gust of damp midnight air that ruffled the edge of the cream-colored envelope lying near Eleanor. Julian didn’t move. His boots seemed glued to the marble as the weight of Eleanor’s words settled over the cavernous foyer. He looked down at the infant sleeping restlessly in the crook of his arm, then back at the older woman who was slowly, agonizingly pushing herself up into a sitting position against the base of the grand staircase. The maroon fabric of her dress was torn at the shoulder, revealing the sharp, bony line of a collarbone that had carried generations of unearned privilege.
"What second page?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping an octave, losing its prior heat and trading it for a cold, metallic dread. "There was only one document folded inside when I pulled it out."
Eleanor let out a dry, rasping chuckle that ended in a wince as she clutched her bruised ribs. She reached out with a trembling, pearl-braceleted wrist and tapped the blank marble floor just a few inches past the envelope.
"People like you always stop reading when you see what you want to see," Eleanor murmured, her eyes locking onto his with predatory focus. "You saw your name as the primary guardian and assumed the crown was yours to wear. You never bothered to check the contingency clauses drafted by the family lawyers last autumn."
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He knelt carefully, keeping the baby secure with one arm while his free hand reached down to scoop up the envelope. He pulled the flap open further, his fingers sliding inside the crisp parchment. His fingertips brushed against a hidden fold in the heavy cardstock that he had missed in the frantic seconds after Eleanor’s fall. He pulled out a folded slip of heavy vellum, stamped with a wax seal bearing the family crest.
"Read it aloud, Julian," Eleanor taunted, her voice gaining strength as she watched the color drain from his face. "Let’s hear how absolute your victory really is."
Julian unfolded the paper under the harsh glare of the chandelier. His eyes scanned the dense legal jargon, skipping past the standard asset distributions until they locked onto a bolded paragraph near the bottom. The words seemed to blur, then sharpen into a razor-sharp reality that turned his blood to ice. The primary guardianship was indeed his, but the estate funding, the trust, and the physical deed to the manor were tied to a condition he had never anticipated.
"If the designated heir is found to possess any criminal record, past or pending," Julian read aloud, his voice barely a whisper, "all rights transfer immediately to the surviving matriarch."
Eleanor smiled, a cold, triumphant curve of her lips. "And your assault charge from six years ago, Julian? The one I conveniently kept out of the papers? It just cleared the appeal process yesterday."
May you like
Julian stared at her in utter disbelief as the heavy front door suddenly swung wide open.
