Chapter 8 - Descent into the Dark

Elena took a deep, shaky breath, gripping the flashlight tightly in her right hand. "Stay right here by the door. Do not come down after me, no matter what you hear. Understand?"
"Mom, no," Clara protested, her voice breaking. "Don't leave us up here alone. The door might close!"
"I'll be right back," Elena promised, though she wasn't sure she believed her own words.
She stepped across the threshold, descending the creaking wooden stairs one by one. The air grew noticeably colder with every step, the scent of damp earth and rust growing suffocatingly thick. When her feet finally touched the cold concrete floor of the basement, the beam of her flashlight swept across the room.
The basement was larger than the footprint of the house above, extending out beneath the front lawn. Rows of old wooden support beams crisscrossed overhead, draped in thick cobwebs. And sitting directly in the center of the room, illuminated by the flashlight, was the second rusted lockbox.
Elena approached it cautiously, her boots echoing hollowly on the concrete. She knelt down and examined the box. Unlike the first one, this lockbox was already unlocked, the rusted latch hanging loosely to one side.
She reached out, her fingers trembling, and lifted the lid.
Inside wasn't a cassette tape or a locket. Resting on top of another yellowed newspaper clipping was a modern, sleek smartphone—the exact model Elena had lost downtown three months ago, right before they moved into this house. The screen was lit up, displaying a single unread text message from an unknown sender.
Elena tapped the screen. The message read: She is buried beneath the floorboards of the master bedroom closet. Don't let her dig her way out.
A sudden, deafening thud echoed from directly above her head—from the master bedroom on the second floor. It sounded like a heavy piece of furniture tipping over, followed by the muffled sound of frantic scratching against wood.
"Mom!" Clara’s panicked scream pierced the air from the kitchen upstairs. "Mom, get up here! Lily is gone!"
Elena dropped the phone, scrambled to her feet, and bolted for the basement stairs, taking them three at a time. She burst back into the kitchen, panting heavily, only to find Clara standing alone in the center of the room, sobbing hysterically.

"She was right here!" Clara cried, pointing wildly toward the hallway. "I turned my head for one second to grab my jacket, and when I looked back, the front door was open and Lily was walking down the driveway toward the old house across the street!"
